Hello everyone,
I've dropped a few lines on some of these threads about (1) the variation in serial numbers, (2) the delivery dates of earlier numbers vs. later numbers, and (3) just trying to understand the logistics. Well it seems that some of my rants are being cleared up by a recent comment about VIN numbers on another website. Seems that VIN numbers
can have the same last 4-5 digits many times over. A worker in a vehicle manufacturing plant recalls that the last 5 digits represent a unit produced a certain month, and that other digits in the 17 digit V.I.N. number refer to month of production, plant of production, and model series, maybe even the color.
That explains how someone is saying I got #743 and only waited 3 months, and another owner says he has #2345 and ordered last year and waited 9 months. YOU CAN ONLY TELL A PREMIER BY THE SPECIAL HANDLEBAR SERIAL NUMBER. And yes, based on the information above, two premier models can have same V.I.N. last 5 digits, depending on the month they were actually produced!
My dealer (in Colorado) received some SM5 rosdsters due for March thru this month May recently. No word on SE5, automatics yet, (I'm first on their list for one ordered). But feel much more comfortable about how these things are being distributed. Yet I still wonder how some dealers have models for sell when other dealers have pre-orders still outstanding. It has to be customers that declined pre-orders, and the dealer is left with a roadster with no customer. A dealer shouldn't have to wait long to re-sell these things, as there are lots of people out there wanting to buy. Heck, I live in Missouri, and willing to travel all the way to Colorado for mine! (That first ride home will be over 600 miles. :joke

Lucky a new dealer has opened in KC, MO and I guess I can just drive it there and have that 1st oil change.
