• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

How Does Shifting Work with the SE?

With the SE trans, I am wondering if it is even possible to mess it up? Like does it only let you shift at a certain RPM, and will it not shift lower/higher? One dealer told me it won't let you shift to a lower gear/higher gear if not at a certain RPM, but just wanted to make sure.

I want to ensure my friends won't mess it up if I let them take it for a spin :opps:

Check out the link in my signature for quite a few tidbits of information for new owners.

There is a section on shifting that should enlighten you on how to operate your Spyder. It is all solid advice from several members of Spyder Lovers who have experience and knowledge you can trust.

Hope it helps out.

Thanks for the answers!

But that still doesn't really answer - can you mess this up? Like for instance in my old BMW you can shift using the paddle shifters and not mess it up because it is all electronically controlled - so you could shift up at 1.5K RPM or down at 4K RP (or so 5 dealers insisted to me).

To some extent, you can screw it up. It will not let you shift higher until the rpm is high enough, but it won't downshift again immediately, so you could drop the rpm low enough to eventually damage the clutch. It would take a long time for that to happen, though, your friends won't do it in one ride. If your Spyder has not had the update that increased the shift point (last summer), it would be a little easier to hurt things, but it is still a gradual process. As far as downshifting, they are unlikely to do damage there, either. One thing they could do is run the rpm up too high, however. The Spyder won't automatically upshift. The rev limiter should save the day, but it isn't infallible. If you are worried that they may screw things up, though, why would you let them ride it at all? There are a lot of other things to get used to on a Spyder, and under the wrong circumstances, many could bite you. JMHO

Oh most likely I won't let them at all, but just wondering.

Battle Creek huh? I know exactly where that is! I grew up in Novi, MI and just moved to LA about a year ago. Hope the weather's good.

Weather's lousy, as a matter of fact. Spitting snow again this morning. Enjoy some LA warmth for us...but don't breathe the air! ;)

I am of the belief that the worst thing anyone can do is let a "friend" take their bike or Spyder for a spin. The transmission is the least thing I would worry about. If one of your friends wants to "try out" a Spyder, send them to the dealer. Let the dealer be responsible.

:agree: let a friend out from Ohio ride my Spyder as he was missing out on his riding season (he rides a two wheeler) When I went to go home I notices a big scrape on my visor that I know was not there, and of course he did not know how it got there. At least it was the helmet that I was getting ready to replace in four months, and not my paint job.

I missed that one Scotty... was that an RT only update? What'd they change?

There was an update announced at the 2012 Owners Event. It addresses the throttle body problem on RTs. adjusts shift points for SEs, and relaxes the nanny's grip on your life a little bit. It may also do some other stuff. If you haven't had your Spyder in for dealer service in a while, call and have him check your VIN number, to see if an update is due for your vehicle.

Friends and your toys

my dad always drummed it in my head while growing up. Friends won't ask to use your toys because they understand the importance of friendship and its fragility?

i would wonder how many good friendships have bit the dust over an unmentioned scrape or a helmet ding?

Cool beans. I've got an RS, so I'm fine, but good to know just the same.

I purchased my spyder because a friend let me drive his as well as other 3 wheeled motorcycles...

I am also of the school that will not let friends hop on the :spyder2: and take it for a test drive. There are a lot of things that can go wrong. Inexperience, different handling from two wheels, or four wheels, etc. etc. Who pays if they run it up a tree or get into an accident? No problem taking them for a ride on it though.

Just like the time I let someone play my Martin guitar (2500.00 plus). They scratched the back from the buckle they were wearing. $300.00 later and a month waiting for Martin to repair it. A quick lesson learned. No, I did not ask them to fix it. The situation multiplies by almost 10 x if you consider the price of fixing a :ani29:
