How do you motivate yourself to do something you don't want to do?

I am frustrated. I need to lose 50 lbs. But I can't get myself to do what is needed to do it. This is because I don't want to. So what I need to do is...accept that I have to do something I don't want to do, and then do it anyway. I wonder how other people do this.

I also weigh myself every day, and it compounds my frustration because losing weight is like waiting for grass to grow. I need to stay off the scale and somehow accept that this is a long road.

Not sure on the details of why and do not need to know. Things to consider as motivation. You could die from the excess weight. You could become diabetic and deal with that daily ritual and limitations of it. You will probably feel better losing the weight. Your knees will love you. And more.

If possible find something you enjoy that is active and work that into a form of exercise. Often serious bicycle or wind trainer riding does well for people that like to ride motorcycles. It is also easier on the knees and joints.

I have participated in Team In Training in the past. If one of their events seems viable that is a great less pressured way to accomplish your personal goal and help others.

I workout at least 5x a week; 3 days strength, and 2 days conditioning/cardio. I'm probably not the best to give advice. I suggest starting easy, something that you like; in your case something that you don't hate. Walking outdoors comes to mind, or on a treadmill, if you don't like cold weather.

1. Start with a 3 minute warmup, slow pace. For me that's 3.5 mph.
2. After the warmup, it's 30 seconds at what might be a fast pace for you, and then 90 seconds at the warmup pace. For me, I go all out with a walking pace of 5.4 mph. If I go faster, it then becomes a jog. Walking is good as is running, Believe it or not, jogging puts more strain on your knees. Repeat 8x.
3. Cool down for 3 minutes at the warmup pace.

I'd leave strength training until you see how you do with the walking. I wouldn't want to overload you. This is just my opinion only of how to start an exercise program. The disclaimer is- Always consult a physician before starting any exercise program.

Also, you are correct; don't hop on the scale so much. You can get an idea of what is going on by looking in the mirror, or how your clothes fit.

I see PMK was posting as I was typing; I'm a slow typer. PMK has good advice.

my Dad use to say... "I would not mind dying ... if it did not last so long" ... living is a good incentive... find a buddy/friend to exercise ..

Weight

I knew that I needed to lose weight and started in January.
1. I hate diets that limit you from anything and have found they DO NOT work for me.
2. If I eliminate something from my eating habits I find I just want it more and will then over indulge with it.
3. Eating all of the same things i normally do, but in smaller portions works the best for me.
4. Dieting without some sort of exercise usually doesn't work. It is like adding gas to your Spyder everyday and not riding it. You MUST burn off some of what you have put in! The same with what you eat.
5. It doesn't hurt to splurge a little every now and then, just keep it to a minimum. If you don't you will get disgusted and stop trying.

I have cut back on portions, started walking a min. of 3 miles per day, took me a week to get to that, and have lost 12 pounds since January. Not happening fast, but I found this is something I can live with and be happy. I have a goal of losing 30 pounds before our Utah trip in June, and if I can keep this up I will be able to accomplish it.

The only problem I see is that I will have to change my user name:yes:

I use the Dr Robert Adkins diet, and have for years to maintain my weight. I just can not eat empty carbohydrates. Suger and bread the worst. See your doctor and read the Adkins book. Good luck.:2thumbs:

Been there done that many times. "Diets" do not work. You have to modify your life style (eating habits). I stay away from scales because they are too frustrating and use the fit of my clothes to track weight loss. Stay away from carbohydrates (especially wheat) and start some sort of physical activity.

Stopping smoking and weight loss are two very difficult items to do.

Neither is fun and requires the right attitude to make it work.

Calorie intake is one of the causes of being overweight. The average male needs 2000 calories a day to maintain and the average female needs 1500 calories a day to maintain.

1# is = to 3500 calories. Burn off or reduce daily intake below the 2000 and you will be on the losing track. A reduction of 500 calories per day below the 2000 will cause you to lose about a # a week. Yep, it is a slow and painful process. When you are in the weight loss mode, anything eaten over and above usual--instantly goes to fat and you get screwed up again.

The daily weigh in can also be frustrating. I recommend going to a weekly or bi-weekly weight check.

I am currently in the "hold" mode. Not gaining, not losing, but could stand to lose another 20# to get me to my ideal weight.

Wishing you the best of luck on your weight loss.

Diets don't work

You need to change slowly, start by taking a walk everyday and trying to limit sweets. Change what you eat for breakfast to start the day out right. I've tried for many years and failed every time, everyone has an addiction to something, food is a very tough one to overcome.

i did Weight Watchers. I lost around 55 pounds. (Gained back about 15). I did it to try to be able to bend to pick stuff off of the floor that I dropped. Haha. However, after losing that much weight, I found a tumor in my neck that was just beginning to be cancerous. Had I waited to lose that weight, I could have had what an acquaintance of mine had. She had most of the area in her throat cut away and part of her tongue or I could have died. It wasn't easy to lose the weight. It took me just over a year and the people at WW were very helpful. You need to find a motivated leader. But thank God I lost that weight. Whatever you need to find for motivation, find it, because you never know...

Spin it another way. Gearheads are always talking about reducing weight. They claim 7-8hp per LB lost. So think of the 7 or so hp your spyder will gain for very little money.

I went from being a desk jockey to working on my feet all day. Reduced my processed food/sugar intake and lost 15lbs over 6 months. I can allow myself the occasional junk food treat and not feel guilty or suffer any weight gain. Oh and get rid of the scale, it will just distract you from your goal.

I bought a bowflex in 2002 and every time I began a workout, I had to stop for some health reason, and got away from it when I had to stop due to blood pressure and blacking out. The problem was type 2 diabetes and two years after finding out about it, I'm no longer being treated for it because I watched my sugar intake and stayed away from a lot of carbs.. When I got the okay to start again, it took a long time to get back into it. I was often teased about my due date and told a couple neighbors who asked, that my water had just broken before I came out the door. I heard groans from them saying that's not what we wanted to hear and I just laughed it off.

Later I saw a picture of myself taken out on my boat and was sicken by it and decided than to start that night with a change of diet. I put the picture on the fridge and every time I went to get something out to eat, I saw that picture and walked away with nothing, except a bottle of water. I ate Tuna salad for dinner, Special K for breakfast and a Whey protein frozen yogurt smoothie with a banana in it for lunch after working out on the bowflex. I worked out on the bowflex every other day and stayed on that diet, changing out the tuna for turkey. Regardless the dog took me for a walk everyday, stopping at every mailbox for a sniff.

The day I had gotten my spyder, I had lost 47 lbs.. The day after I got the spyder in mid March 2009, I was in the ER with pain in my right shoulder, that had moved down my right arm. I had a clogged artery on the right side of the heart and spent more than 4 hours on a rock hard wooden table having a heart cath done. I had 3 stents put in and never again do I want any part of that table. That night after the stents went in, the nurse was removing the heart cath and I had a heart attack and died. I never knew it until they told me the next night. With every thing they did to bring me back, I felt nothing. I than had another problem and my heart rate kept dropping. A pacemaker was installed and I was sent home a few days later. I went back to my diet, but couldn't do much of anything else but walk. I was told later I could eat what I wanted in moderation but have sworn off fried foods, frozen, canned food, veggies and buy only fresh. I also got into Bison and have that to eat also. I watch my sodium intake and do less than 2000 mg a day. Before leaving the hospital, I asked my doctor if I could go to the firing range, he said give it a month. Asked about my boat and said ask me in July when I see you. I didn't mention the spyder and in June, I went for my motorcycle endorsement and was very weak, but passed it.

Today I workout on a total gym every other day. I sold the bowflex because I can do more on the total gym. I started out slow and am working up slowly. I still have many health problems and most are related to exposure to agent orange while in Vietnam. I lost a total of 68 lbs. and was at 195 lbs and my housemate Tami said I was to skinny. I put on another 15 pounds and stay at around that weight. I still eat the same diet and if I go off for a few days I always go back to that same diet. Eating breakfast was a big change for me and I used to just eat at night. I quit smoking after the heart attack and started again, but than changed to vapor and haven't touched a cigarette in over 6 years and my cardiologist is okay with the vaping.

Since I eat so much turkey, on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, I'll get a 2" thick NY Strip Steak and add in some stuffing with a sweet potato, that I slice and add cinnamon and brown sugar and put on the top rack of the grill. When the steak is done to a medium rare the sweet potato is done. The day after I'm back to my diet and back on the total gym. I try to stay at around 210 lbs and like now I'm at 219 lbs. so will work harder to get back down. I rarely go higher except during thunder beach, when I eat out with friends and always return to the same diet.

Getting started is the hard part, but than it becomes part of your day to day living and rather than go through what I did and still going through with more problems, for now I can still workout on the total gym. By this summer sometime, I'll be back on that table for a bigger pacemaker and have to stop the workouts for awhile, but will have the dog take me for a walk and remain on my diet. I turned 66 a month or so ago and feel better today due to the workouts, than I have in more than 20 years and when I get the okay to go back to working out after new pacemaker, I'll be able to do more than I'm doing today.

I workout 6 times a week (4 One hour spin classes and 2 Arc Trainer Days).
Eliminate Salt, Sugar and Saturated Fat, Dairy Products (And RED MEAT) to the best extent you can and Read every container for its contents.
I'm 67 and don't have a Doctor, Don't take any meds, and Want to live a Long Time and NOT end up with somebody sawing through my chest to save me.nojoke

motivation

The way you phrased your guestion tells me your doomed to failure. If you don't want to do something you'll find reasons to fail. If you really want to do something you will overcome whatever comes along so you can achieve what you want to achieve.

Three conclusions I have come to regarding dieting and losing weight.

Every diet works for someone. NO diet works for everyone.

The best way to lose weight is to have an affair! A love affair with hunger pangs! :ohyea:

Every person in the food and medical industry who is knowledgeable about diet and nutrition shares a common characteristic with every teacher of every religion in the world. There ain't a single one of them who has a lock on the truth!

Okay, I'm going to quit going to my dr. for check ups, and I'm going to start eating only grass (not that kind though).
