• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

How do I remove the hand grips?

I'm playing with and adding doodads/farkles to my bike and was thinking about risers. How do you get the grips off? Mine are I guess standard, but I don't see any way to get them off.

Been there done that when I installed Heat Demon grip heaters. The stock grips are glued on and the only way to get them off is to cut them off and then scrape the residue off the handlebar. good idea to have new grips on hand before you begin the process.
 
it can be done

take a long skinny screwdriver and work it in between the grip and the bar , the whole length of the grip. roll the screwdriver all the way around the bar until all of the seal is broken. you should be able to work them off the bar. it worked for me.:thumbup:

:agree:.....With Coz on this ......use a Phillips head it's easier and after you get the shaft in :roflblack:, spray some WD-40 in .....put the shaft in a different spot and repeat twice. Go to the other grip and do the same thing......Unless it's an emergency leave it sit overnight.........They should come right off........Mike :thumbup:......PS, I have done this three times and have never GLUED THE NEW GRIPS it's not necessary...........PPS make sure you clean the grips well if you re-use :2thumbs:

i have used the same technique as the wd-40, except i use a spray electrical contact cleaner inside.. just use the nozzle extention, and follow the gap next to the screwdriver.. be careful not to run the screwdriver thru the side of your grips.. and the most important thing... protect all surrounding areas from any over spray or leaking of the contact cleaner! ... after squirting the cleaner in, pull the screw driver out and work the cleaner around inside by maybe twisting the grip a little.. they usually break loose, and come off like a greased pig... the cleaner works well, to loosen the old glue, and does not contaminate the grips with oil... (the whole reason you don't just cut them off, is to be able to use them again)... good luck ...

You have gotten three good pieces of advice on removing them so that they can be re-installed.

When I removed mine ( '08 GS SE5 ) I found that they are not glued 100%. It seems as though, during assembly, they slapped a spot of glue on then shoved the grips on. I doubt that mine were glued more than 1/3 of the area.

And I did not use any adhesive when I put them back on; they work just as before.

Ditto on the WD40 removal method. I've done it several times on Goldwing grips. If you want to secure the new grips and be able the easily take them off again, use a cheap hair spray. It will secure them for normal use, but if you just twist hard on them, they'll break free. If not, WD40 again.
 
Not sure why you need to take the grips off for risers but WD works good but anymore I just cut them off seeing I never reuse them.

I used gas, friction and a thin phillips screw driver. I put the phillips screw driver under the inside of the grip, put the gas in along side screw driver. Do this around the grip at four evenly spaced around the grip. Grip will slide off. When I replace the grips I use fiction tape. Wind a layer tape the length of the grip minus 1/4 of an inch, wet with gas and slip the grip on. Let dry for an hour in the summer and two hours in the winter.
That's IMHO.

When you gas are you talking gasoline?

BTW, obviously the right hand grip rotates to operate the throttle, doe it have an extra tube over the 7/8" pipe, or how dose the throttle work?

Yes, gasoline because it makes rubber slippery and has no oils in it. The throttle works using two cables, one cable opens the throttle bodies and the other one close them. The throttle grip has a extra tubing over the handle bar. The reason I used this method to put grips on is that when I raced off road the one thing I did not want to happen is having a grip coming come loose. That's IMHO.

So is WD40, Bake cleaner, and many others that people use. These are all HIGHLY FLAMMABLE!!!!!!!! If you use gas in a small quantity it's as safe as other products and works better. Fueling a Spyder or any other motorcycle is much more dangerous. That's IMHO.

Thanks for all of the advice. It finally warmed up enough to give it a try. What I found was that a letter opener (and a little WD40) worked best and it only had a little glue on the top side maybe 2" in from the end and 1/2" to 3/4" wide.
