There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. How do I go about getting new keys for my 2014 Spyder RT? Is there any way to get into a locked rear trunk?

I lost my only key for my 2014 Spyder RT. I was told to find a locksmith to code and cut the keys I needed, and then take them to a dealer to program. Does any body know if that is right? The locksmith just sounded unsure if he could even cut a key. I've read conflicting Info. I do have an extra barrel lock, but it is in the rear compartment and it is locked
Is there a way to get in to the compartment? PLEASE HELP!

No, not right. You have to buy a blank Spyder key because the chip on the key is coded from the factory. THEN, you can take the blank to your locksmith to get it cut to the lock… if possible. THEN, it needs to be programmed to the bike with BUDS, either by a dealer or a private person with BUDS. So, you’ll need a way to transport the bike to the locksmith (unless he is mobile) and dealer.

But the most reliable - and official - way to do it, is to buy a new ignition switch and key set. Eliminates the locksmith part. The dealer replaces the switch, programs the keys with BUDS, and boom, you’re done, and you have 2 keys.

Unless and until you can at least turn on the ignition, you’ll have to disconnect the parking brake cable on the rear caliper to move the bike.

The conflicting information is because 2014 and newer Spyders have a different DESS system than 2013 and earlier. The newer version doesn’t accept a cloned key. You have to be careful which you’re reading about. This is an easily solvable problem. It’ll just cost a few bucks. And all things considered, not really all that much. Good luck.

Exactly. Imagine being on a trip a loooong way from home. You're coming out of the restaurant, you go to fish the key out of your pocket and drop it down the storm sewer grate... and it's the only key you have... and it's a long way down. Saving money is the American way, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and write the check.

I just got two blanks, haven't got them cut or cloned yet, but one will be on the bike where I can bust into it for sure!!!

Yes, I did know that I have to buy a new chip key and I'm going to buy extra keys. I remember hearing that you can get chip keys for $50, but I can't find any under $70. Do you know the best place to get keys? Is there any way to get into the rear compartment? Does a locksmith have the technology to put something in the lock to get the code to cut the key?

The lock for your trunk is nothing more than a pin tumbler lock. Very basic stuff. It doesn't require the security chip in your key to open it, nor is there a “code”. If your lock smith has the expertise to unlock and open your front door if you got locked out of your house, then he has the expertise to "pick" and open that lock. If he doesn't, then get another lock smith. Yes, any competent lock smith has the ability to get impressions from that lock, or use some other skill of the craft, and cut a key for it. So, if your lost ignition key worked in both your ignition and your trunk, then the lock smith can cut your new chipped ignition keys using the trunk lock as the guide.

The price of a blank BRP Spyder key is 70 bucks. Just go to your local Spyder dealer and order them, once you know that the locksmith that you have can cut the correct pattern on the keys. Otherwise, you're buying a new ignition switch with the associated new keys. The part number is 710004408 for just the key. You're not going to save any money by ordering them on-line, and a dealer might actually have them in stock.
