There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. How critical is the 600 miles for first oil change - 998 cc

Hi All, I’m new to the site. I’ve owned my 2015 STS for 2 and a half weeks now. I bought it with 19 miles on it. My question is I put 850 miles so far and I made a appointment to get the oil changed. But due to COVID they can’t get me in till July 24th. Will I damage the engine if I keep driving it till then? I can’t stop riding, I’m addicted. Any thoughts from advanced Spyder owners?

Your good. We bought a new 2011 in 2012. Put over 650 miles on the first two days. Could not get it in for the oil change until a week later. Over 1500 miles then. No problems whatsoever.

I don't think it'll be too much of a biggie Panic.

I tried to purchase a new Spyder RT Ltd from my nearest dealer back in 2013, but they stuffed up my order (the ONLY thing they got right was the colour I wanted! :banghead: ) & then they were faffing around trying to convince me to just accept it & take something they had in stock, without making any effort to actually get me the Spyder I'd ordered, paid a deposit on, and waited a fair while for!! :cus: So I went to the next nearest dealers, about 900 miles away, and they couldn't do enough to get me on the Spyder I wanted! Upshot was that I got a lift over there, they found/assembled & I purchased pretty much the exact Spyder I wanted (at a much better deal/price too!) and since the only thing they couldn't get me was the seat colour I wanted, they gave me back $1000 cash in hand to help buy the right seat later, on top of the great deal I'd already got!! :ohyea:

Only then I was on a brand new un-tried & not yet 'run-in' Spyder, 900 miles from home on a Saturday morning and the only way back home was to ryde!! I wanted to ryde it locally for a bit before heading off into the wilds, so the dealer arranged to have their tech contactable by me & available over the weekend just in case anything went wrong (it didn't) & I rode 'locally to them' (& uneventfully, at least Spyder-wise) for about 500 miles on the Saturday before setting off on my trip home on the Sunday morning - and the sales bloke even called to make sure it was all fine & then rode the first coupla hundred miles with me too! :firstplace:

So when I did get home, I had almost 1500 miles on the clock and the local dealer there, despite me having made a booking for a service before I left, suddenly found they couldn't 'fit me in' for that first service for yet another month, by which time I had over 3000 miles up! And while it might not be ideal, recommended, &/or even possibly not the greatest way to start out, in my Spyder's case it didn't seem to hurt anything! Even now, at well over 20 times that mileage, my V-Twin Spyder is still going strong and the oil analysis reports I get on every third oil change show no indications of wear or any other adverse effect at all! In fact, it runs a fair bit better than most (yeah, the ECU Upgrade might just have a little to do with that.... ) and it even uses less oil than most similar engined BRP machines! :ohyea:

BTW, you are aware these V-twin Spyders DO use a bit of oil, don't you?? Check your oil regularly, AFTER each longish ryde is good, using the recommended checking method so the oil is up to temp & pumped into all the right places for properly checking oil levels on the dry-sump engine, and top up as necessary, just don't over-fill it! The oil level is fine just so long as it's somewhere between the Low & Full marks, but I wouldn't start off on a trip of more than 100 miles or so if the level is lower than about 1/2 way down - or any higher than the Full mark at all!! :lecturef_smilie:

Enjoy, and get the service done as & when you can!

You are fine going a bit longer on the initial change.
After you see sticker shock on the first service and oil change, start hunting up videos and learn to do the change yourself. Saves a bunch of dough.
998's do use oil, there are several oil threads here. You are safe with BRP oil changed often. IMO there are better options for the twin. (I'm pretty much the only one that thinks that way though.)
How did you stumble on a new 5 year old 15? Hope you got a killer deal on it.
I'd have 5 year old tires in the back of my mind constantly...
Have fun.

Jack it up, put some blocks under, drain the oil. Filters are bit more trouble but not overly so. Get some Mobil1 motorcycle oil from Walmart, filters from dealer, and have at it.
