Hitch install

I left home at 6:09 this morning and got to Reno's Power Sports in Kansas City about 8:45, just in time for my 9am appointment. They insist it's about a 3 hour job to install the hitch, module, etc. - at least that's their standard charge. So I hung around the sales floor a while until a salesman noticed me. I asked if they could loan me an ST while they work on my Spyder.

"We don't really do that."

:sour: How about a long test-ryde on an ST while they work on my Spyder.

"We don't really do that. But one of the service department guys can give me a ride somewhere."
Bummer! :gaah:

So I got a ride to a Starbucks and I'm sitting here having the coffee I've been craving all morning, and catching up on my internet time-wasting!

3 hours to install the hitch is crazy...Can usually do it in less than 15 mintues...That's for the GS/GS..Not sure about the RT

My hitch and harness was 3 hours also. I watched some of the install and it took most of that time. No complaint, it would have taken me a lot longer than that.

Must be a lot of difference...I've got the Canadian version off Ebay for my GS...

Larry, the hitch is the easy part the wiring harness is not.

The hitch and wiring harness should take < 30 minutes. I just got one installed and watched the whole time the tech installed it. Unless they are mounting a 2010 hitch with a round plug.

Here is a photo of what they took off, two pieces of plastic and disconnected the gas strut on the seat.



The shop charged me $79 labor to install the hitch. If they charge you 3hrs they are screwing you real bad.

The tech that put mine in looked depressed until he discovered it was not the round plug then he was happy.

Now it looks like I'm getting a new rear tire, too! They said it looked like it was due for a new tire and when I told him I'm about to do a 2500+ mile road trip, they definitely recommend replacing it. This trip is getting more and more expensive. A new tire isn't really a fun farkle!

Know the feeling, I was checking the tire pressure Monday and the RT rear tire was bald in the middle. Installed new tire Thur. made it 12416 mile on the old tire.

Yup.

For the round plug, you've got to remove the left side case in order to run the wire harness properly. Did the install myself; 3 hours sounds about right.

I'll keep this short cuz I'm on my iphone & it's hard to type.

I told them when. Made the appt I have a 2011 RT & am buying a 2010 trailer. No problem.

When I dropped byke off I showed them a pic of the trailer plug.

They installed a 2013 hitch - apparently the only one now available. It won't connect to my trailer harness. As I ck out they find the part I need in the catalog of & say they can order.

They knew when I made appt what I had and they should have had it ready!

However the BRP adaptor only makes the 2013 hitch fit trailers from 2011 or 2012! 2010 trailer? SOL?


I complained to the owner but I don't think it mattered much. They sent me home with a wiring diagram. Lucky me.

According to the accessory catalog, BRP does make an adapter from the 9-pin round trailer to the square-4 2013 harness.

Unfortunately, The connector on the trailer end is not compatible with the 2010 RT-622 connector. You would have to wire it directly or swap coonectors, unless you can find a matching connector. (This is not the plug you use to hook up, it is the one at the trailer end of the tongue.) It may be easiest to just purchase a mating square-4 pigtail from a NAPA or other auto store, or a trailer or RV store. Replace the existing 9-pin connector or splice in the new pigtail, and you are in business. When you make the connection, use the right and left brake wires on the RT-622. The turn signal wires and lights are not used after 2010.

Ann...The Canadian guy that sells the hitch also sells the electrical connection to the trailer for $39....Works perfect for me. I should mention that mine is a 2009 GS and the harness I got with the hitch was for a 4 pin connector...I have all the signal functions working correctly.

I purchased a 2010 trailer with a round plug the other day. It's simple to replace the round tongue harness with a square plug harness. For $40 get #710003227 RT-622 Tongue harness. Cut off the plug on the trailer end and using butt splice connectors connect the new harness to the old plug under your trailer. If you go this way I have the wire colors that you need to splice. Most will tell you to cut the plug at the hitch end but this is butt ugly and you don't get the locking tab that secures the plug to the Spyder.

When my wife was looking,we went to a local dealer.They said no problem after asking her a few questions and having her watch a 5 minute video.
The sales manger had her follow him on a 7 mile ride.

Guess it all depends on the dealer.

Yeah, they found that part number as I was checking out! But they don't have that part on hand. My point is that they knew all that they needed to know to have all the parts available and just didn't.

I know I can make that $40 adapter work, but I can't get that adapter because the

parts department didn't try to consider all the parts that may be needed to do the complete job!

BTW, I've edited my post for all the typos.
