HIT by the DREADED DESS

Well, I went out today to start up Blackie and there it was DESS!

Tried the 2nd key - same.

Waited a few hours (battery was on tender) - same.

FORTUNATELY, with all the information online, I decided to give one more try by going to the battery and removing the Hot (positive) side and touch NEGATIVE.

Found that the hot side screw had loosened and was only finger tight.

Removed, touch negative, replaced and TIGHTENED.

Took a deep breath, put key in ignition, ON and PRESTO. :bowdown:

Back in business. :yes:

So now here is the 24K $$$ question.

If one gets the DESS error should it lock in a code or only if there is a failure of the ignition or module.
Reason I ask is no codes found when doing the SET/MODE/TURN (screen did pop-up but NOTHING)

And thanks to all those that recommended the battery "trick!"

Only active codes will display. If you turn off the key the active codes will get stored and then only BUD's can pull them up. So when you want to check for codes, do not turn off the key or they will be gone.

I had a DESS show up on my 2014 RT spyder. Went to the shop and no codes showing. They tightened up some things and so far so good.

When we pull up the codes on our bikes, it'll only show us what is going on at that moment...
However, all error codes are stored in the computer, and the BUDS system at the dealership has the ability to pull up all of the stored codes that have popped up... :thumbup:

Be wise to check with your vin# at dealer or brp to see if you fall in the group that had faulty ignitions switches. Its a pain when it goes out away from home and doesn't come back...:gaah:

Glad to hear that it worked out for you. I had the same situation, and did the same fix. Going to have my dealer check it at my next service, but they didn't think it would show on the buds.

I have the same DESS problem...Went to start the Spyder last Sat., No start...Cycled the key off and on several time and DESS goes away and it starts...Every time I turn it off I get the same DESS orange screen and I need to cycle the key and it again starts...Called my dealer and he has a call into his BRP tech support guru...Still waiting...Mine did NOT require the ign. switch update...Battery cables are tight...

I will update when its fixed...

DESS Unit Failure.

I have also run in to this problem with my 2014 RT Limited.

Stopped for lunch about 50 miles from home. Went to start the Spyder and got the DESS error repeatedly. Walked away from the bike and back several times with no changes.
I found a ride home thinking perhaps it might have been the key. After returning with my other key I experienced the same results.

Right about the time I was going to call a tow truck.. And that would be after about 20 plus attempts at starting the Spyder to no avail, the last turn of the key was successful and I drove it straight to the dealer.

The BUDS analyzer at the dealership showed it throwing several codes regarding the DESS which correlated to a service bulletin from BRP indicating the module was defective.

The DESS module was replaced under warranty and so far I've not experienced any further failures but it's only been a short while since it was replaced.

Hopefully I've killed the dreaded DESS dragon.. Getting stranded 50 miles from home with a DESS error is pretty frustrating to say the least!

Had same problem with what you had. Took it to the dealer and they reprogrammed it but still failed after i tried to start it at dealer. Showed them right there and they took the bike and sent for another new module which was under warranty. Just got it back yesterday after two weeks.

can you explain what you meant by touching the negative. You didn't touch the pos to the neg? Thanks
