Hissing sound, loud

Hi all,

I've started to hear a funny noise (2016 Spyder RSSM5)... A hissing sound, like compressed air escaping. Seems to be coming fromthe front of the vehicle.

It seems to happen when the engine is at higherrevs, actually it seems like it happens mostly at times when the rpms arebetween 4700 and 5500, in any gear, except 5[SUP]th[/SUP]… so like higher revsbut not even hard acceleration makes it go away).

I can't reproduce it all the time, but it's beenhappening more and more. As this is my daily driver, I need to figure outwhat's up and make it go away. The vehicle seems to be operating just fine,only making this funny sound which it didn't used to do… The sound is directlyrelated to engine speed, not vehicle speed as it’s most audible in 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]gear at 4900-5000 rpms, and 35-38 mph.

The onlything that isn’t stock is the K & N air filter, which I installed as soonas it came home from the dealership, in June of 2016.

Interesting....

of course it could be either way..sucking or blowing. :agree: something may be blocking the airflow to the throttle body or the air box has come loose. Check the crankcase vent line to the airbox or other hoses to the throttle body and air box...:thumbup:

Hissing sounds related to engine revs not road speed & coming from the 'engine compartment'? Hmm, as suggested already, it's probably worth checking the air box & inlet ducting etc, but also have a squizz at the exhaust gaskets & pipes (they are, the front gasket especially, sometimes a bit hard to get sealed properly)...... there again, maybe it could be those pesky vacuum hoses sucking wind too, but that'd normally make the engine run like a sick dog! :dontknow:

When sitting on the spyder, the airbox is on the right...this sound is definitely coming from the lefthand side, and only if I hold the gear (any gear, but mainly second gear) over 4300+ rpms...whereas if I "baby" the transmission, I hear nothing of the sort. However, it's my understanding (from reading this, and other, spyder forums) that the Rotax motor is designed to rev high, so that's how I drive/ride it... I shift around 5500 - 6000 rpms during normal riding. And, now that I'm paying very close attention to everything while riding, I have noticed that the acceleration isn't INSTANT, once I get on the gas, as it used to be! It's not far off from instant, but I can tell a difference as I ride every day (daily driver)...

I'm 95% sure it's air being forced out, rather than in... I'll be taking it apart and checking all of the suggested things, to my initial post, this afternoon...

Also, SOME times (approx. 20-25%), when initially cranking (after it's been sitting for more than 5+ hours), I'll hear a loud "POP" sound, like something "freeing" itself, a millisecond before the engine fires/cranks...and then it's gone...and I won't hear it again for a few days...very strange to me!

I'm also being plagued by a little squeaking noise in the front...but ONLY under power/throttle, at lower speeds (15-40 mph). As soon as I let off the throttle it ceases...the sound is like the front wheel bearings need grease. What could this be?!

Not sure about the squeak but check all the hoses on the engine. Could be a bad vacuum hose or a crack in the boots under the throttle bodies. Yes the 998 engine likes to rev, keep it around 5k rpms and it will be happy.

Trouble shooting 101.

With the engine idling, spray some carburetor cleaner on the hoses and connections. Also spray where metal to metal parts join. If the rpm changes, check that area thoroughly.

P0107 - MAP sensor

The hissing noises just "stopped" and everything SEEMED to be just fine, albeit the acceleration wasn't "instant" as it's been in the past...a slight hesitation/pause, as if to say, "Are you sure? Oh, alright then...". I changed the oil at "my" designated 2900 mile mark, and within 3 miles the engine note took-on a "deep" tone and nose-dived from 35 mph to 10 mph (think of letting off of the throttle on a jet ski, type of deceleration)… I immediately pulled over and shut her down! - And trailered it back to the house. "No fault code"(pressing the turn signal cancel, mode and set at the same time)...disconnected the battery and after reconnecting, fault code "0P0107"...
Soooo, where, online, can I find a MAP sensor for my 2016 Spyder RS SM5?! It'll crank, but the rpm's at idle are ALL over the place! 1300-3200-1800-1100-2600, all within 2-4 seconds... I've tried contacting the two dealerships closest to me but, as usual, they're taking their sweet time about getting back in touch with me.
This forum has, without a doubt, helped me out FAR more than the two dealerships and their spyder "specialists" closest to me! I can't even get a reply/call back...it's been two days now...and this is my daily driver (small town perks!)…
