Hindle questions

My '08 came with the Hindle exhaust, and although I do like the sound, I am less than thrilled with the pops/cracks/backfires. I also do not like the stuttering I get when I slowly roll on the throttle. I talked to my dealer yesterday, and they said if I wanted to try the stock exhaust, they would sell me a brand new take off for $50. They also informed me there was an ECM update for my bike, but they did not know if that would cure the Hindle issues or not. Reading on here, some people say there was an ECM update that fixed some aftermarket exhaust issues, others say there wasn't. Anyone know for sure if there was? And if I go back to the stock exhaust, would that make the bike run smoother? Thanks!

I have an 0-2 modifier that was put on along with the Hindle and K&N filter...Absolutely no backfires or stuttering..That seems to resolve the problem but many people have had success with the Hindle without modifying anything.

Sounds to me you are having the same issues I had with the Hindle exhaust. The Spyder runs on the lean side stock and when you add a free flowing exhaust it leans out even more especially in hot weather. You basically have 2 options, put on stock exhaust or add o2 modifier or fuel management system such as a Juicebox or Power commander.Do a search for these and you will find a wealth of information.

I finally ended up with the Juicebox Pro and added Evolutions Race air filter. No more backfiring and Spyder runs better than ever.

Thanks for the info. I really don't mind the stock sound all that much, but what concerns me about going to a stock exhaust is any lack of power. Do aftermarket exhausts give you a noticeable power increase?

BRP's 'claimed' increase from the Hindle is 4hp, a little less than 4%....so probly not noticeable at all in normal driving.
I have the Hindle and experiencing the identical issues you are....especially now in the hottest part of the year.

Mine is much worse when its 90+ out. I think I will see if the ECM update does anything, and if not, I'll try gong back to stock.

Mine is too, runs very 'ragged' during in town riding. Plenty of power and no noticeable hesitations out on the road tho.

I had a Hindle ..had he pops and cracks and backfires ... got an o2 mod and no more .. however I believe that the place that sold the o2 mod is no longer in buisness ... The hot weather exacerbates the popping ... especially at low speed and at deceleration ... My hindle finally bit the bullet so I built my own exhaust for under a $100 dollars .. http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?42101-The-Hindle-finally-blew-so-what-to-do ...here is the thread if you decide to go that route ...it is super easy ... love the sound .... and no popping

Do the ECM update first. That may or may not resolve your problem. An earlier update leaned out the Spyder under some conditions. Add a Hindle, and it sounded like Rice Krispies. I'd also check your Y-pipe gaskets. These fail prematurely, and can induce exhaust popping and backfires. I recommend replacing them with the Goldwing gaskets. If these steps do not cure your problem, a Juice Box or Power Commander is probably in order...or a return to the stock muffler.

Yeah, I am going to wait in the update next week. I had heard about the Y gasket issues, and I'll look into that.

I've still never actually seen/heard a Spyder with a Hindle and no fuel modifications that doesn't pop when it's hot out.

Spyders run lean stock. The Hindle makes it run more lean. Hot weather makes it run even more lean. Lean = Hot = popping/backfiring and other undesirables.

Leaking exhaust gaskets make it run more lean. Green, K&N or high flow filters make it run more lean. You get the point.

Excessively lean also means less power, lower fuel economy and can burn up your plugs faster. The backfiring generally reduces the life of the muffler itself and in the worst cases can cause physical damage to the exhaust system or the engine, rings, and other important bits.

Another thing you can look at is your Ambient Temp sensor. If it is improperly located or damaged it will read high, which will... make it run lean :yikes:. Make sure it's in the proper location and working (search the forum for AATS PDI).

Other than that you'll need something to modify fuel. My personal recommendation is "anything Dynojet sells" but I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions here on the subject. The cheapest option used to the the O2 Modifier which is no longer available. Power commander includes an "O2 optimizer" with their PC5 product, which is pretty much the same thing. I wonder if you can get it separately?

The Spyder is currently @ the dealer for the ECM update. He did not know exactly what this update did, but he said it was a new one, and he was updating a couple other Spyders along with mine. If this doesn't help, I may have a slightly used Hindle for sale! :)

Or, to phrase it differently....Is the JB Pro a plug 'n play mod for a :ani29: with a Hindle? :dontknow:

Just picked up the :spyder:from my dealer. It seems as though the update fixed my Hindle issues. When I start it now, it idles at a steady 1400 rpm, whereas before it hunted between 1400 and 1450. I rode it back to my office, which is about 5 miles, and never had a pop/backfire, nor did it ever stutter/hesitate. This is in 92F temps which usually made it more pronounced. I'll know for certain as I ride it more, but it seems to be much, much smoother. I do not know anything else about the update, as the dealer said they didn't get the specifics as to what it does except update the ECM. I can say they ran my vin # a month ago, and it showed all updates/recalls had been completed, so this only showed up recently. If anything changes I'll report back, but as of now I am very happy! YMMV.

Just a quick Hindle update. Since the ECM update, the Hindle has performed very well. I rarely get any pops/crackles, even in hot temps, and low throttle response is very smooth. Anyone that has the Hindle needs to inquire about the ECM update at their local dealer. :2thumbs:

Glad to hear your :ani29: is running better.

I checked with my dealer about the update, he said all required updates have been, but to check the air filter and airbox for oil. While doing this I found out I had a K&N so I cleaned/oiled the filter, removed any oil in the airbox and mine has been running much better also. :2thumbs:

I have the same issue, I just got it back on 9/3 and the dealer tech told me the stuttering is a "normal issue" with hindle and 2 brothers exhaust....
Today the weather was 95 while I was out and about, and it felt at times like the engine was going to die while i was sitting at stop lights...grrr
