I've driven on that runway back around 1980, or so. The Space Shuttle Enterprise had just come to the Space Center for the first time, ferried on the back of a 747. A few days later, after it had been de-mated from the 747, they put it on display for the public to come see. They directed traffic onto the shuttle runway for parking. Those were pretty exciting days!
