Helmet noise

My wife asked me to ask are some helmets quieter then others? She gets a lot of wind noise and has trouble hearing the helmet speakers.

Our Nolan Trilogy models are pretty quiet. Very quiet with the full face shield attached.

I totally agree - this is a very quiet helmet!!!

Generally speaking; once you find a helmet that fits correctly, it'll be quieter than one that's too loose...:shocked:

HELMET NOISE

As a catagory, I think the order of quieter helmet would go......Full face....then Full helmet drop down shield.....then 3/4 helmet......then 1/2 helmet straps on the side....yes ..no..maybe ?????.......Mike.......:thumbup:

Its a full face Bell helmet. When the shield is down the buffeting noise is much greater then when it is up. Is this true with your helmet?

Most people wear a helmet that is at least 1 size too big for them. Most people just do not understand how a helmet is supposed to fit/feel. This creates a lot of issues, one being more noise. Others being the helmet moving around on your head when buffetted and coming off the rider in an accident.

The rule of thumb is, the more bobbles (vents, etc.) on the exterior of the helmet, the more noise. But there are other factors involved.

Even with the least noisy helmet available the sound levels on a motorcycle are enough to damage your hearing. That is why ear plugs are always recommended.

Here is a good article by WebBikeWorld. This group also tests and evaluates a lot of helmets and they always comment on realtive noise levels.

So it's the bike, and not my stereo cranked up that's making my ears function as ornaments only?? :shocked:

I often leave my visor cracked just a wee bit to get a quieter ride; every helmet reacts differently to each circumstance, so experimentation can go a long way towards making any of them more liveable.

Here is my opinion

ALL helmets are noisy. Some are less so than others,

Hearing protection is essential. Many of my friends have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) from riding without hearing protection.

Wear earplugs.
It's counterintuitive, but you will, in fact, hear the helmet speakers better and hear less road noise when you wear earplugs.

You can still hear car horns and alarms. And yes, you will still be able to hear the loud pipes.

You can buy them at any motorcycle shop, and even get them at Home Depot in the small motor section (weed whackers and chain saws).

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
But in this case, I'm NOT.

Wear earplugs.

Thursday, I was in Cartersville Ga for the 12k service and new rear tire . They had a SHOEI neotec in stock and in my size. I have Nolan 103 and trilogy, I like both, but the Shoei was a great fit on MY head. This a new helmet and I think it lives up to the hype. Very quiet, cool and balanced. I wore it home 150 miles and was impressed.

Mighty Plugs

Has anyone used "Mighty Plugs" from Benefical Products in Oregon.

Open face helmets tend to be more noisy than full face helmets. I wear a full face Shoei helmet and find it very light weight, quiet, and comfortable ,more quiet when shield is down.
I also wear an HJC open face helmet that is also quiet. My Shoei helmet was fitted and sized at a bike show by Shoei reps at the Shoei booth. Both helmets fit snug but not tight and are very comfortable to wear all day.

If by Nolan Trilogy you are talking about the N 43.

I ride the same one and I use it open and shield down. I guess I will differ with the others who say it is quiet. Personally I think it is the noisyest helmet I have ever used.

Dont get me wrong I love the other features but noise is not one.

Has anyone used "Mighty Plugs" from Benefical Products in Oregon.

Not used mighty plug but the wife bought a pair of custom made ear plugs at one of the rally's.
they eliminate a tremendous amount of noise BUT they make her fell isolated and uncomfortable.

Your mileage may vary.
