Helmet help

Hey guys...the newbie again :helpsmilie:Not really a Spyder question, but from the looks of what I've read on this board, you know a lot. I have a full face helmet by HAWK, and I love it. It's got the little built-sun visor, and just awesome graphics. When I first got it, it fit but wasn't like super tight. Well I've noticed the more I wear it, the looser it has gotten. I really don't wanna drop another $120 to get a smaller size because I still wear the helmet (it's not so loose that it's not wearable). I was just wanting to know if maybe y'all knew of something that I could put in there to make it a lil more snug. Once again...any help would be appreciated :thumbup:

Depending on where it's loose (cheeks or crown) you can change out the padding to make it a more snug fit. Chances are the helmet was probably a little too big for you to begin with. I had a medium at one time, thinking I was all good.... ended up finding that I am supposed to wear a XS!! Got a new Shoei helmet in XS and it's perfect.

As previously suggested may just need to change padding, Check and see if it is removable and if HAWK has replacement padding first.

I have 3 hlemets - HJC all of them but the sizing is diffent in all of them. The first was a CL-MAX I went and tried it on and the Med was the right size so I ordered on line and have a great fit. When the IS-33 came out I again went and tried on the helmet and the Med seemed great but now when I wear it for long rides I get terrible headaches. I also bought a HJC half helmet and I had to take a small in it.

Just make sure you have a good fit - no good to wear a helmet that is sloshing around on you coconut or having one so tight that it makes the use painful.

And when chosing a helmet, make sure it fits the crown of your head snugly, but not too tight. If it fits there but it's a little tight (or loose) in the cheeks, just change the pads.

Some people put on full face helmets and just assume it doesn't fit because the cheek pads are tight and end up with a helmet that doesn't really fit them right. An ill-fitting hemet is almost as bad as no helmet at all!

Yup - just change the padding. I have a full face that I bought last year - felt a little too loose when riding (I don't wear it much but it comes in handy for very cold days). They didn't have the padding where I bought it but I called the manufacturer directly and they shipped me the new pads no problem and it fits really good now.

I don't want to sound like a wet blanket, but you need a new helmet. A loose helmet is not a safe helmet. Many people buy a helmet that is too loose to begin with, then it gets looser with age, as they all do. Many people also buy too big a helmet to get it to fit in one spot where they have a pressure point, when what they need is a different shape of helmet. Please do yourself a favor, and replace your helmet with one that fits properly. All the cheek pads in the world won't prevent a concussion from a loose helmet slamming against your head in an accident.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. I will check with HAWK and see if I can possibly get some more padding for that helmet. If not, I will definitely be getting another one soon.

Scotty's right, you probably need a new helmet. Like I said in my post, the helmet probably didn't fit you right to begin with. That's what I found out, three helmets, and $600+ later. I am so glad I have one that fits me right now. :doorag:

Two important rules in buying helmets are not to buy something just because it's cheap and not to buy something just because you like the paintjob. Those two things are just nice extras to a well fitting helmet.

Nancy'sToy is right. A new helmet should be TOO Tight as it will get looser as the padding takes on the shape or your head.

It's designed to do this as the more contact area the padding has the better it will protect you.

If the helmet fits JUST RIGHT when new, it is sure to be TOO LOOSE after weaing it for several hours.

I know this may sound like a pet peeve of mine, and maybe it is. But as PP's go, it's a pretty important one at least.

A medium quality helmet that fits properly will give your head more protection than the best helmet made that is too large.
