• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Heip please.

Hi,

I am a retired teacher in central NJ. I am soon buying a STS SE5. Would like some advice.

Some questions you might be able to help me with are.

What happens if you break down on the road with a Spyder? Do you call a tow truck?

I want a GPS… but prefer to buy my own... because I can update it as new tech. advances. I think I need to have a 12v option added. Have u any better ideas here?

If you buy before the end of April, they are offer a 4 year warrantee free instead of 2. I don’t think much of warrantees because they depend most on who is giving the warrantee. Most of the time in my dealings…. they try to find a way to blame you to get out of the warrantee obligations. I know it depends a lot on the dealer… but how does BRP hold up here?

Want to know how to buy it wisely. So far, my local guy wants $24,830.30 for the 2014 STS SE5 in Circuit yellow metallic. This includes set up.. prep... freight , tax and motor fees. Another… just an opinion I would like here…because there is no real answer… but if I get a better deal elsewhere… I plan to go back to my local guy and say…. hey man! Now … if he won’t meet that price .. and I buy else where… will I get tortured by him on my service and other calls? Just your opinion here of course.

Welcome
Yes you will need a tow truck
You can mount your own gps that is what idid
I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THE WARRITY CHECK WITH YOUR DEALER
ASK YOUR DEALER FOR THE BEST OUT THE DOOR PRICE,
Good luck

:welcome: :congrats: on your fine taste in bikes and websites! :2thumbs: :D
If you break down on the road; you'd just need to let the tow-folks know to bring a flatbed...
Warranties? Take them whenever you can; particularly if they're FREE!

Central Jersey? I served my "Collegiate Sentence at Rider, in Lawrenceville...)
Where are you?

I would try and get him to take another $2000. off that price. Give Louis power sports in texas a call, ask for Curtis. You want their out the door price and then add Tax, title and license. Your dealer should be able to be very close to this price.

Yes the current promotion will include the 4 year warranty which will include roadside assistance.

I would check around with a few dealers...possibly look at going over to PA as I know some dealers that are very aggressive there including Rusty Palmers in Honesdale, PA. http://www.rustypalmer.net/ Ron is the Sales Manager and a great guy. Tell him that Shawn Scott aka Spyder-Dude sent you and he will take care of you.

One thing on owning my 4th spyder since 2007. I have never paid freight and prep charges and know a lot of people that haven't but I know a lot of dealers that insist that everyone pays that. Also watch the documentation fee that some of these dealers charge. I know in NYC/NJ some of these dealers charge up to $700 for this which is just a scam. I won't pay more that $149 to have them do the paperwork that is required but 3 of my spyders I have purchased I never paid a fee like this either.

For the Garmin 660 GPS that BRP sells is about $200 more list price but will find that some dealers will discount that as well. I like the fact that BRP includes the Spyder dealers in their GPS but it isn't updated with the latest dealers.

:welcome:

My suggestion is to see what other "freebies" i.e. accessories they can throw in. Usually dealers can throw things like oil changes in advance, helmets, jackets, etc. I usually get my vehicles at their lowest asking price provided they include extra accessories and other services.

Good luck!

WOW.... I paid less than that for same machine and color and had radio, hitch and bigger windsheild installed, think I would shop around more on price....include a service plan they are worth it...

I would say it's no different than breaking down in a car. Some problems I can fix on the road, some I can't. Some I might be able to call a friend or relative who could come after me with a tow vehicle. Some I might have to call a tow truck. My insurance includes roadside assist which will tow to the nearest dealer or to my home.

I want a GPS… but prefer to buy my own... because I can update it as new tech. advances. I think I need to have a 12v option added. Have u any better ideas here?

I use a Garmin 1490 that I bought cheap at Sam's Club. I added a Ram mount and a 12 volt outlet.

If you buy before the end of April, they are offer a 4 year warrantee free instead of 2. I don’t think much of warrantees because they depend most on who is giving the warrantee. My experience with BRP's factory warranty has been very good. However, I think that may depend to a degree on your dealer. Some dealers seem to not want to submit warranty requests. My dealer provides excellent service and does not hesitate to submit warranty requests. My experience with aftermarket warranties (not B.E.S.T.) has not been as good.

Personally, I would try very hard to buy from the dealer that would be servicing my Spyder unless there was a large difference in price. It just stands to reason that dealers will treat you better if you spent your hard-earned money with them. I would if I was a dealer.

:welcome: The above posts have you covered on the questions. I am one who believes a good servicing dealer to be an important part of the customer satisfaction equation. The best price does not necessarily mean the best dealer to service the :spyder2:

Dealers are supposed to service :ani29:'s under warranty--but some seem to discriminate against those who do not purchase from them. I recommend keeping that in mind and doing some customer satisfaction checking.

Enjoy your hunt and let us know what you decide.

Get AAA towing with the motorcycle add on. You won't need it, but the peace of mind is nice.
If you ever need to tow it, it must be on a flat bed. It must be loaded very slowly and carefully otherwise the front nose will scrape. Most (but not all) tow truck drivers know how to do this. If you get one that doesn't, make sure you call his office so he can get instructions. AAA is excellent with this.

An oil change costs about $100, maybe a little less....plan for this cost. Also plan on getting a full service periodically. This costs about $350 or so. This sounds like a lot, but it is not out of line with other high performance motorcycles. It is also real important.

When it comes to replacing tires remember that motorcycle tires are softer than car tires. They grip the road better, but they do not last as long as car tires. There is a lot of debate about this on this forum, but ALWAYS think in terms of safety FIRST.

Take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course....whether you need to or not, and get a motorcycle endorsement on your driving license. It will help you be safer, and you will save many times the costs on your insurance. Also, get a couple of books on motorcycle safety and read them. A Spyder is not a two wheel motorcycle, but a lot of the concepts apply directly. Always practice safe driving techniques, if you need them to avoid a crash, you won't have time to remember them--so make them a "muscle-memory" habit.

check the brakes, coolant, and brake fluid EVERY oil change.

Do not use Windex or any ammonia based glass cleaner--ever. It will craze the plastics. Use Plexus or Lemon Pledge...no ammonia ever. If you use ammonia your windshield and lenses will cloud up with a yellowish haze.
