• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

heat issues on 2012 RTS SM5

Not to worry..!!

There were a few units 2013 with heat issues mostly ryder discomfort, not engine overheating. There were modifcations made but your 2012 is good to go, no problems. Enjoy it you will get very attatched to it...:thumbup:
 
I have a 2012 RT-S SM5 and have had absolutely zero problems with it. Enjoy your new ryde. Welcome to Spyderlovers as well.
 
Just bought a new 2012 RTS SM5 a couple weeks ago. Are there any engine over heat issues that I should know about?

It is not your engine overheating it is your temp gauge going bad disconnect the gas gauge and temp gauge and use the digital gauges will come up on the main screen it happen to me the gauges are junk I have a RTS 2012 and it has worked great 0 big problems over 23000 miles of riding

IMHO the best thing you can do for your 2012 RT is install a BajaRon sway bar. It reduces the body roll a huge amount. My wife would not ride with me until I put the sway bar on. The RT's get pretty hot in summer time and I'm looking forward to the better air flow and cooler seat temperature after removing the air box and resonator and putting my filter on.

I have 2012 RT and no heat problem like many others. :congrats: you picked the best.

:agree: My 2012 RT SM5 is cooler to ride in the summer than the 09GS as far as heat being felt on body parts BUT---- I have Removed the lower 2 bottom panels Like many and it makes a BIG difference- Especially the Panel on the lower right side where the Brake Master Cylinder is! The opening under the right side is Bigger than the left (Oil Change) Side and lets out a LOT OF HEAT!!!!nojoke
 
I've got to agree with everyone else on this one...I've had Z-E-R-O issues with my '12 since I bought it a little over a year ago. Now, where's that wood I need to knock on???
 
Great machine!

We had a 2012 RT L and rode it 7650 miles in 2013....NO ISSUES at all. Great bike and was very reliable. I did block off the heat on the upper vent area to relieve the heat on my foot.

We had zero heat issues in regard to it overheating, even in traffic in the summer (fan would come one, but never overheated).

A couple of weeks ago, I took my 2012 RT S for my trike endorsement course (required in Washington state) which consisted of two days of instruction (4 hours of classroom/5 hours of riding each day). A lot of starting, slooooooooowwww riding and shutting off of the bike. When I got home after the 1st day, I noticed smoke and a burnt electric smell coming from the console. Got her to the dealer the next week for a check-up and they said that they couldn't find anything wrong. I'm still doing some preemptive work on my bike "Just in Case". Taking some advice from Phil's Mods on the DIY Forum, I pulled off the right underside panel and cut a 6" hole in it, and pop-riveted some steel mesh over it to keep out any rocks and debris. Then I mounted a reverse polarity fan on the panel and reinstalled it. Now all I have to do is figure out where to mount the switch and tie it into the electrical system. Next I intend to pull the air-box and replace it with a KewlMetal system. That (with a couple of other tweeks I want to make) SHOULD take care of any heat problems that might come up.
 
Gas gauge and Temp gauge going wacko!

Has anyone had problems with 2012 RT LTD 991 SE gas and temp gauge going wacko?? Mine is at the dealers now and they can't find anything that would cause the temp gauge to bottom out or the gas gauge to stick at 1/2 tank. If you thump the dash they will straighten out but then a little later go back to being wacko.:banghead: Thanks,
 
I had a 2012 RTS SE5 and rode it for 6,075 miles over a 20 month period. These bikes have have heat "issues", just not as bad as the 2013 RTS models.

I know many are saying this MY doesn't have heat issues, but I would disagree. The easiest way for you to make up your mind is to ride the bike 10-20 miles (it doesn't have to be above 90 degrees, an 80 degree day is more than enough). After you have ridden a good distance, stop and pop up your seat; feel the gas cap/filler neck. It will be hot. You can measure it with an IR gun or temp gauge, but your hands will tell you it is hot. I would say a hot gas tank is not a good thing. If you do a google on what temp gas boils, you will find it boils at a temp far below water (212 degrees F). Depending on the octane level (higher octane boils at a lower temp):
. Once you remove the bodywork, you will see the routing of the exhaust pipes. One pipe runs parallel to the gas tank - but it is only an inch or so away. You can imagine the air flow coming through the body blowing off the heat from the pipes against sensitive components. Its no wonder the gas/gastank gets so hot.

There are lots of ways to try and address the heat; more/larger holes in the under body, change out the air intake to a simpler setup to open up the air flow, wrap the exhaust pipe, or ceramic coat the exhaust pipes. Some riders did multiple combinations of the above. I took a different approach, one that seeks to keep the heat in the exhaust pipes. I got some Quadrafire Ceramic Insulation Blanket (http://www.ebay.com/itm/251650176016?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT) rated to 2,400 degrees F. It is nice and thick (1"). I cut 10" wide strips and used SS exhaust wrap stays to hold it around the exhaust pipes - you have to remove the body work on the sides. The nice thing is that it is far easier to do than using the 1" or 2" wide exhaust wrap and wrapping the exhaust pipe. This stuff really holds the heat in. My gas cap didn't get hot anymore. But, the best side affect was the MPG improvement. By keeping the heat in the exhaust pipe, it keeps the exhaust velocity up, so the engine is more efficient. My MPG got close to 36 mpg if I kept it between 60 and 65. I am sure if I stayed closer to 55 and 60, I could get 36 easy. At 70-75, it dropped to 31.25. I have switched to a ST model and will be covering the exhaust pipes like I did to the RTS. Look for my post in a few weeks.
