• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Heat in glove box

Are there any heat related concerns about keeping a phone in the “glove box” during the summer? On the F3L, 2019, the glove box is where the phone is stored and connected in order to used BRP connect.

I’m not sure how much heat build-up occurs in the glove box and/or how how much heat a smart phone can tolerate but it sure looks as if it would be a small oven in that tiny space?

Thanks

As a newbie I have to ask, would this question not apply to the RT as well? I know I keep my iPhone in little 'box', and wonder about it, but I'm aware it will power off if it gets too warm.

2019 f3 Yes too hot for the iPhone, mine overheated and shut down . Moved it to a mount in the middle of the handle bars ran cable from box to phone for BRP connect now it cool , I can see when connect is not working and see my txt and notifications , also don't leave in bike when stop or done riding.

I think you will have a problem on a long trip,I did on an RT.I also had a dark screen happen on my dash when stuck in a 5 mile jam on a hot day,it took a half hour to lighten up again after picking up speed.

Which forum comes up from time to time.

I am thinking it is more of a general topic because we all have some type of glove box for the phone. The later ones have hookups for the charger cords.

It could go either way and it does not need to be posted in multiple forums either. The current forum is fine. The site is not going to crash or burn because of a technicality.

On a hot day it will cook in there, I have my phone up on the bars with a Ram mount which has adjustable side brackets and a spring loaded claw on top, and no worries about losing your phone with this mount as it has taken huge impact landings on my sled that you would never see on a street bike. I like my phone mounted high as I can keep an eye on the road while glancing at the map, plus it's close to my right hand.

I also have a 24/7 12V outlet I installed in the dash as I use the bluetooth instead of BRP Connect.

According to Apple, iPhones have an operating temperature ambient situated between 32° and 95° Fahrenheit, that's 0° and 35° Celsius. The manufacturer also provides information about a non-operating temperature interval ranging between -4° to 113° F, that's -20° to 45° C.

That is not very hot. The ambient air temperature here often gets well over 100 degrees F in the summer. I have a Samsung, but never noticed it not operating because of heat, even when the temperature outside is up around 110 F.

Well I have to disagree with you. The OP post originally posted in the GS section. No glove box. Also ST models do not have a glove box either. So the question does not apply to everyone. Also Glove boxes are in different location on a F3 as compared to a RT. Heat is an issue with both. The usb cable to BRP connect in not in the glove box on most RTs. So to the admin that move the thread to the F3 forum thanks.

Another issue I have noticed lately. A lot of old threads have been dug up. Not really a big problem, but in most cases it would have been better if the new poster started a new thread. What I noticed is that many of the old threads are in the wrong forum. Even if they where created in the correct forum. So an Admin must have moved them incorrectly.

On my 2018 F3L. I do not put the phone in the glove box anymore. I have the phone mounted on the handlebars. In the beginning my phone often went in overheat mode. The apps slowed down to almost useless speed. The battery would stop charging. Later I notice that the battery life had dramatically dropped. May have been a coincidence but I believe that the heat was a contributing factor. My new phone has never been in the glove box. Most new phones have water resistance rating that allows them to perform perfectly well on the handlebars even in the rain. So that is where my phone lives on the Spyder now. The added benefit is the phone easily accessible to use to take a picture. Or use the garage door opener app. Etc.

A little bit of I respectfully disagree here....

Old posts that have been revived vary rarely were ever changed from one forum to another. Most of them were in the days when there were no "active" moderators around the site. Stuff usually stayed wherever the OP put it.

I have already mentioned about current. We are not forum police looking to change something for the sake of change. And when we do, guess what, some people are still not happy.

RE: The 08 GS, 09 RS, , and ST models....we sometimes had to make do with what we were dealt. I put BRP tank bags on both my 08 and 09's. So we had compartments for whaterver way back then.

As mentioned earlier, a wrongly (subject to interpretation) posted item in a thread will not cause the site to crash and burn.

Here are some examples. Threads started before the F3 or F3 forms existed. So someone moved them.

I put my phone in the glove box on my F3T and haven’t had an issue and I live in Las Vegas. Of course I don’t leave it in there when I stop.

On the 10-19 RT I would not recommend putting the phone in the glove box, we call that the Top Oven as you could easily use it as a microwave oven!

The examples you show were from 2011 and 2012.

It was not any of the current moderators. We did not come on board until 2018.

And...there were way fewer forums in those days. F3, and Ryker were not invented yet.

When things got changed up and extra forums were added, I am guessing a few things may have been slotted differently. The moderators had nothing to do with that either.

Thanks for all the reply’s. It seems as if the glove box heat issue, 2019 F3L, can be a concern. I suppose I could leave the glove box lid open a bit to keep the heat down or I could just mount the phone on the bars with the connection cable dangling out over the dash to the phone or just put the phone in the dash and close the lid as BRP intended.

There are other options as well and I don’t wish to over complicate this issue. My main goal is to ride not navigate. But since I have these features on the spyder, and I paid for them in the price, I figured I should make a reasonable effort to use them.
