• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Hard Starting

Went to go for a ride yesterday and my 2012 RTL didn't want to start. I hadn't started bike in about 3 weeks so that may have something to do with hard staring. When I went to start the engine would spit and sput like engines with carb would when flooded. Had to crank engine over for probably minute before it would start and when it did start ran rough for a few seconds. I pushed the mode, set, signal cancel buttons to see if error codes showed, nothing. Went for 200 mile ride started and ran find. Anyone had similar problem and if so what was cause?

Let's see....

Could have needed a blow out. Hold the throttle wide open and crank for a bit. them release and start normally. this will clear things up

My guess,,, Battery

If you don't keep it on a battery maintainer, it's probably the battery. Your description fits what happened to Ann (wife). Put a multimeter directly on the terminals to test the volts. A new battery should read 13.2 volts and as they age they lose volts. Anything less than 12 volts, get a new battery. A new battery produces 2.2 volts per cell and they have six cells.

Walmart sells a battery load tester for about $29. That'll tell you more about the battery condition. Instructions that come with them are clear. I always use it before long trips.

Since it cranks and you don't mention a blank screen I believe your battery is ok.
how many miles and have you had the valves adjusted?

my guess is old gas! Battery should be fine

Gas or Battery

Could be gas. But,,,,,,,I have a horror story concerning the battery. Ann's 2013 ST limited started experiencing long starts similar to your description. Days later down the road in the middle of nowhere Nevada the battery light came on then the regulator and stator failed catastrophically. The hard starts were because the battery couldn't hold the charge at high enough level but had enough to turn it over. :banghead: Eliminate the battery as a cause by testing it, could save you from a very expensive tow and repair. The battery test is a simple test!

Don't be so sure it's gas. The first reply had it right, test anything that could cause the problem. I'm not sure it's the battery. I am sure it needs to be tested.

If it's gas, there are products at auto stores that will stabilize the water and ethanol in it and help with smoother running. They're cheap. Just ask at the counter of your local auto shop.

Keep us posted when you get the problem solved.

Thanks for everyone's reply. Just to updated, I put a new battery in bike in April this year and yes I normally do keep it on battery tender although I didn't this time, my mistake. When I installed battery I used star washers and I did check to make sure bolts were tight. This time of year I normally go riding atleast once a week but had some things going on that I couldn't. After thinking about and your comments I think I may have gotten some bad gas or sitting for 3 weeks gas got water in it. Again thanks for everyone's input.

Hi Mate

Sorry", I forgot to mention that when the spyder started to crank over the screen went blank but then it started up after about 30 seconds . I have it booked in for major service in about 4 weeks and the bike has done 32000 kms. I think that the service includes the valves adjusting if they need it

regards Peter
