Half helmet like HJC IS-2 vs 3/4 or full face helmets

I have my Shoe Multitec. Like it buts it gets damn hot in the summer.
I have my Nolan N43, I can wear it as a 3/4 or use the chin bar etc. This is what I wear now.
I've been thinking of getting a half helmet like the HJC IS-2. I like the pull down sun visor.

What are your thoughts?

I have the HJC..only complaint I have is that you get some wind noise...not much but I fixed that problem with earbuds and bluetooth pairing....It's a good helmet for the price.

:lecturef_smilie: Oh boy. You don't know the can of worms you just opened up.

I have the scorpion 3/4 helmet and love it. Certainly more wind noise, but I like the wind in my face. I also wear prescription glasses/goggles with it.

We have the HJC IS-33 (x2), one for me and one for her. Really like the integrated sun shade. Haven't found it to be too hot....yet. Ask me later in the summer when the Texas heat rolls in.

Your worms, or someone elses?

Can't find it right now but there was a member selling a half helmet that ended up being destroyed due to the lack of safety it serves and by the request of another member.

Pretty interesting thread. Hope someone can find it.

Half Helment?? Why bother, just put the ball cap on backwards. If you know anyone that has ever crashed at any speed on the street, this is a NO-Brainer, if I can't wear a Full Face, I'm not riding two or three wheels....case closed. Good Luck on that decision

When I was a young rider, all I could buy was a half helmet. High sides with a leather/web/shoestring suspension and a thin cork liner. That's all they had until the Bell aircraft-style 3/4 helmet came along. I bought that, then...it was state of the art. Now they have full-face helmets with more protection and features than I ever would have dreamed of then. I can't understand why anyone would want to take a 60 year step backwards when there is such great modern gear available. My head is more precious to me than that.

1/2, 3/4 or full face, it's a matter of personal preference and choice. I wear a 1/2 helmet in the summer because I can't handle sitting in traffic in hot weather with a full or 3/4 helmet on. Is a 1/2 as safe as a full or 3/4, no, but a 1/2 helmet is still better than nothing.

Actually I was the seller of that helmet. The video can be found in my SteveMac mods section. A slight correction. It was destroyed because of one former member here whose "perception" that it was unsafe. He and I went back and forth because he hijacked my for sale thread with his personal opinions about the safety. After a time, he paid me for the helmet and I took it out and filled it with 12 guage buckshot. The helmet held up and will be strapped on the back of my RT at SpyderFest. He made arrogant comments like $40 dollar helmet for a $40 head and insulted others about dorags and backwards caps.

I think an ATGATT approach is just fine if that is your conviction. But to demean or put down others because of their choice has always been baffling to me. Those of us who choose to wear a half helmet, or even no helmet when laws allow, are making our own choice. I for one understand that I am making a safety compromise in the case of a crash. But I feel more alert and in tune with my half helmet and more responsive and aware of vehicles around me.

So do I make that compromise? Yes.

But, I contend that a large percentage of ATGATT proponents also make a compromise.

Here is why I feel that way. If an ATGATT proponent wears full armored leathers and full face helmet along with boots including ankle armor and NEVER deviates from that, then I accept that they are ATGATT. However if that same person forgoes any of that protective gear for any reason and wears a mesh jacket or no jacket during 100 degree days or on a short trip to the corner store,, then in my opinion they are not ATGATT. At best they are ATGMOTT "all the gear MOST of the time" or ATGSOTT "all the gear SOME of the time. So that person has made a choice to compromise the UTMOST safety for a choice of convenience or comfort.

So in essence they make, albeit to a lesser degree, the same choice I do, to forgo safety and are no longer ATGATT by definition.

I definitely would not argue that "all the gear" is more safe. Likewise a full face would be more safe than a shorty in a crash. But if I am more alert to my surroundings when wearing my half helmet when changing lanes (for example) then I may very well avoid that accident altogether.

Here is my philosophy. If you are ATGATT ATGMOTT or ATGSOTT then I will never ridicule or demean you. Kudos to you for gearing up as you choose. But by the same token, if I make a choice on my personal gear I will expect others to respect that choice and keep the demeaning dorags or backwards caps comments to themselves.

To each his own. There are enough things that we all agree on like love of our rYdes and spending good times together that we can surely respect other's choices on their gear.

So, if you are comfortable with the choice to wear a half helmet, then by all means do so!!!

My two cents.

Stevemac: Just a really great post, well written and absolutely point on. We all set our own comfort with risk. It is an individual decision. I live in Harley country, by far the majority of riders around me do not where a helmet. That is not for me. I would NEVER get into it with someone about not wearing a helmet on their Harley, mainly because I don't want to get punched, but also it simply is none of my damn business. I wear either a hybrid or 3/4 helmet depending on weather, I am comfortable with the risk I take. To each his/her own. Heck if you really want to be safe, ride a SUV with all of your equipment on.

Well said SteveMac, I appreciate another opinion in line with mine. While I will rock a full face helmet pretty much all the time, I might do it in a tshirt and shorts.

Im weird like that. I heart my face but from the neck down I aint that hot.

I used to wear half helmets all summer (and summer lasts 9 months in southern Louisiana), but on the RS I've gone to a 3/4, just for the wind noise and that's with the (ugly?) touring windshield. I agree that while the 1/2 provides less protection, it does allow the rider to be more in touch with their surroundings. All helmets have shortcomings, and are most effective protecting the rider in slow speed tip overs, which is where the Spyder's 3 wheeled stance is already inherently safer than traditional bikes.

Well said SteveMac . Being a very new :ani29: ryder . I find my personal comfort level is wearing a mesh jacket and leather palm and mesh backed gloves in the summer and a 3/4 helmet with M/C sunglasses. on cold days its a leather jacket and full face helmet. Even on hot days I felt more comfortable riding with my gear on. Some people that I ride with do not wear a jacket and gloves on hot days ,one thing we have for each other is respect and no comments are made on what we wear .

:roflblack: For us old timers, riding that way once or twice on an old Triumph or Harley leaker cured us forever. So did the Triumph Trophy high pipes. Still have the scars from those indiscretions! :roflblack:
