Hacked Air Box

I prepped tonight for getting the new air filter from JT. Yep, that is not a lot of fun. The top came out ok, the box not so much. Since it is on her bike, I had to ask permission/convince her to let me go the slightly easier route. I tried undoing and loosening everything in sight to try to get the big part out and it just wouldn't budge. So, with permission, I got the dremel out. :shemademe_smilie: Here is the result... and why you would never want me to be a surgeon...

Needless to say, I got everything but the resonator out tonight and I am debating leaving the resonator in because those front 2 mounts do not look fun and I don't intend to take the frunk off if that is what it requires...

Definitely looking forward to getting the new air filter on. :D :yes::yes:

....

Looks just like mine when it came out. I actually used a RotoZip tool. It was really easy to drill a hole and start slicing. I let my dealer take the Resonator out at my next service.

Yup, what a nightmare. I too had to take extra measures to get the box out. I ended up removing the right frame rail and breaking the "legs" on the airbox. For mine, the resonator was the easiest thing to get out as it slid out the left side of the bike. I bet the bike will run cooler with all of that open space around the engine now.

I Had to go to church after taking out the air box! The man above wasn't happy with my language. No it won't go back in.:yikes:

If you leave the resonator in you will still have heat issues. The resonator is the left side air blocker. Remove the hose (held on with a tie-wrap). The resonator is only secured by one screw on the left side and the two front mounts you found. As you are now a certified air box surgeon why stop now. Disconnect the three large connectors on the left side will help get the pieces out

Well; Didn't Cortez burn his ships, when he landed in the New World?
It kind of gives a bit more... incentive for success! :D :2thumbs:

It's no problem I was just poking you in the ribs... You can change it back.

;). Really excited to get this project done if you can't tell. Then in a few months after the memory of the airbox extraction fades I will need to do it again on my spyder.

I'm really excited about getting this project done as well. Can't wait to move on to the next project.

Thanks

I should add "permission" is a bit strong. :lecturef_smilie: Hearing Baby Blue being cut apart was difficult. :barf: I just said until mine is put back together I have a shiny red toy. Not that it is a great time to ride right now anyway.

It was a MAJOR wrestling match, but the airbox and resonator came out of our 2010 RT intact and ready to go back on, NOT!!!

I managed to get the resonator out tonight.:yes::yes:

All in one piece. Just had to loosen up a few things to get enough play to slide it out. Oh, and I did hold me tounge just right which helped.:roflblack:

You might be ready to ride before me, my RT is in a zillion pieces and work :cus: keeps me from putting the new air filter on and getting it back together.

So definitely no going back in for any warranty issue. Hmm..

I wonder how a service tech would remove this? Would removing the frunk make this easier? Or more involved than that?

Removing the frunk is about a 10 minute task. To get the air box out you need to lower the right brace that goes from front to back. To get to the bolts you take the frunk off.

yup, I have had mine in and out 4 times and it got easier each time. I took the brace right off and the frunk then watched carefully as I wiggled it out so I know how to reverse the process. The first time I was just about ready to give trying to reinstall when suddenly it just slid back into place. After that I was easy since I knew it would work if I kept trying. That being said it was definitely one of the more difficult parts to remove and replace on the RT.

The drunk was easy enough and allowed me to easily get the resonator out. I investigated taking the brace off to get the air box out but opted to cut it out instead.

Now that her Spyder is basically done, I'm not looking forward to doing mine, but at least know what to expect.
