• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. H.I.D. ?

Just Doo Me

New member
Recently wired in a set of H.I.D.S from Custom Dynamics and used Lamonsters step by step instuctions posted here. After doing the first one I compared it to the stock using the light switch on the r/s bar and found everything working good. Then did the second one and when trying it out it had no light from it so I switched the ballast and wiring between the two so I could see if it was bulb or ballast related.Well the one that wasn't working now lit up and the other that had before now didn't.I then thought I may have got a bad ballast as both bulbs had worked with the one. While figuring out what to do next I happen to hit the high beam switch and both lights lit,odd because the lights are single filament and the switch just opens the projector in the stock set up.I did try low beam and everything stayed working.I then pulled all the connections apart and made sure all was seated, everything working.Next time out there was a small delay on the one side is this normal? Rode for the first time this year to a friends and when leaving one was out again until using the r/s bar switch then both lit.Any ideas?

What is the "r/s bar switch" you are referring too? Where are you getting your source voltage from? Does your system have dual relays? If so I'd start there and your way up to the ballast switching only one thing at a time after verifying that you have 12V to both of the ballasts. :D

There is a switch on the r/h control that operates the lights regardless of key in/out, power on/off. I believe it's to light up the frunk when the lid is open the light bounces into the frunk.

By the way I am that guy you met back in Nov, that was picking up the Phathom when you were walking in with parts. Thanks for the heads up to this site. It's the best one out there!

Yes the switch that BlueZL6 referred to.The power is coming from the stock headlight wires if you go to the how to section in this forum that is exactly how I hooked things up and is the same H.I.D.S. I'm not sure if by dual relays you mean dual ballasts? If so it does.It just seems the one side takes a bit of a surge to fire the ballast ,like by flicking the hi-lo beam switch or the r/s handlebar switch.

From your description it appears you have an intermittent ballast. When you swapped the ballast earlier and the problem followed it, to me that indicate a problem with that ballast. :D

Good luck with finding your problem.

That was my thought as well, though what makes this interesting is the fact that when the light switch is pressed the ballast fires. So what is it about that switch that delivers that extra bit of current to fire the ballast? That is the interesting part for me. Assuming the ballasts are wired in parallel they should be getting fed the same current at the same time and should both fire. So my suspicion is still the ballast. But please let us know what it turns out to be. This is a good one. Well, let me re-phrase; that is an intriguing issue. Best of luck, but I know you will get it!

Have you contacted Custom Dynamics about this issue, and received any resolution yet?
Yes I contacted them here's what the tech had to say"
Hi Jay, first the easy question, a small delay is normal as the HID has to ignite, it takes a second or two.
The HIDs will either start or not start when power is applied, if it fails to start for any reason, it will not start again until power is cycled to it. If the HID is coming on only when using the r/s bar switch I would think that it is having a problem getting power for some reason. Is the problem one the right or the left now? Thanks Dave" My reply was "

Hi Dave thanks for the quick reply. The bulb that is slow to ignite followed the ballast so it was original on the right but I switched them over to test[ballast] and it is now on the left.Today when I tryed it both came on but the left took just a little longer to get to full brightness.Sounds like this may be normal operation but I just wanted to double check. The Saturday when I was leaving from a buddies the left side didn't ignite until I flashed the r/s bar switch then it fired and stayed on.Temperature was cool 5 celsius if that makes a difference. These are wired into the stock light plugs .I'll keep a eye on them when i'm able to ride some more but that may be a while ,more snow rolling into Ontario over the next day or two.I'll let you know if I am still having a problem. Jay"Waiting for the weather to improve but my feeling is it is a ballast problem.Started it in the garage and one didn't come on until I hit the bar switch again.

I also think it is a faulty ballast at this point. Hopefully they will get back in touch with you and send you a new one.

My HID's take a little bit to warm up and hit full brightness, I am sure they all do. My 3,000K fogs actually start out an interesting green color until they warm up to the nice yellow. However, they all fire up instantly for me. There is no delay in starting them, just in them hitting full brightness and color.

Best of luck with getting this issue worked out.

Yes its looking to me like one ballast will need to be replaced.I'll have to contact Custom Dynamics and see if I need to send the bad one back or if they will just ship me another with proof of purchase shown.Like to avoid the hassle and cost of mailing it back if I could.
