Great RT driver cup holder for $7.00

I saw all the threads regarding the cup holder from Camping World for the passenger hand grips for the RT (photo on left). They were $6.77 so I bought quite a few to experiment with hoping I could make one work for the driver. I took took the clamp off of one today (one screw) and took one of the screws out of the throttle side grip, purchased a longer one for $.40 cents and mounted just the cup holder portion. I put a few rubber bumpers on the bottom so it was level with the handlebars and presto, it looks and works great. It blends in very well, out of the way and just what I was looking for.

Looks good to.

Drink Holders

I've got two of them mounted on the forward part of the pax hand grips, at a 30 or so degree forward angle. They work real well, are out of the way and I'm happy with them. Putting one on the front is a great idea. Use one of the thousands of Bike Lawyer cuzies given out every year and your in business. Holds a Starbuck type coffee cup also.

You can also get these from a website called mycupholder as well. I did a little modification to mine. I like big cups, so I took it off the clamp, put it in boiling water for a few minutes, took it out (make sure you have some kind of hand protection on), put in a 32oz cup (use one that is stiff), and then ran it under some cold water. It held its shape pretty good. It did shrink a little back so I just cant put the bigger cup in, I still have to wedge it in there a bit to get it started, but it is no where near as hard as it was before. Of course now it will not hold a small water bottle in as secure, so there is a trade-off. Who knows if this will stay this way, thinking the hot sun may make it "shrink" back down to its original shape, guess we will see. Now I need to mount it. I will go find some rubber washers and see if I can get it level.

I have one of these that I mount to the passenger grip (pointing inward so the saddle bag doesn't hit it) and it works well, but I'm curious to know how you have it mounted on the handlebar. Can you post some closer pics and explain how you mounted it and the type of hardware used?

Well, I have not mounted it quite yet. Hopefully will get to it tonight. I went to Lowes and got a couple of packs of 8-32 screws, 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" long. Not sure which one it will be, but you take out the bottom screw for the throttle assembly (or if you want it on the left, the other side) and mount it to that. You will need the longer screw, as the original is too short once you put the cup holder up there. The trick is getting it level. I am going to find some rubber washers to try. I am not sure what the OP (original poster) used. I will try to get some pics tonight if I get to it.

I think he means those stick on bumpers like you put on cabinet doors. Hmm, will pick those up too.

Ihope you did not use 8-32 in there as the original is metric.
anyone know what the metric is?

There are three holes in that location. I assume you used the middle hole in the bike side and the middle hole in the bottle mount . What size ( length and thread) did you use. I think it is metric.

I had purchased one of the holders for the passenger grips. After reading this thread I took the clamp off, went to Lowes and checked. The lower bolt is a M4 metric size. I also bought a plastic piece that bolted through the bottom of the cup holder to hold it out from the handlebars to keep it level. I got an m4.70x40 bolt that went into the slot perfect. I did have to add a washer inside the cup holder to complete the project. Will test it on the road tomorrow going to Cuba. Thanks for starting this thread!
