• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

GPS?

Desert Spyder

For the last couple of weeks my :spyder2: has been starting while in 1st gear (I have a SE5). Sometimes it immediately goes into neutral after starting, sometimes I have to force feed it. Is this a GPS adjustment thing or is it starting to go out? I try to leave it in neutral when I park it but many times forget.

I believe there is a calibration of your GPS that the dealer can do, and there is also a trick for installing it "just so." It may be a bad one though. I'd see your dealer, this can be dangerous with an SE5.

They did a calibration...

on my SO's SE5 back in April. It was having a problem like you are describing. Since the adjustment it has been fine.

Quote from Spyder Operators Guide, page 19," NOTE: The SE5 model can be started in any gear with the brake pedal depressed. The transmission automatically shifts to neutral when the vehical is started." There are also notices not to apply throttle while the electrical system is initializing or while stating the engine. If the brake is on, engine idling, the centrifugal clutch isn't going to engage until throttle is applied. My ryde is a SE5, I'm not sure I see your problem.

I normally start the bike while standing next to it and allow it to warm up for a couple minutes and let me get my safety gear on and put stuff in the trunk. The first time it started in gear it took off without me. I live in a mobile home and park the bike perpendicular to the carport stairs. It took a nosedive into the wooden stairs. Fortunately no damage to either the Spyder or the stairs but if this happened in the open I'm not sure how far the bike would have traveled.

Is this calibration software related or mechanical?

Why not sit on it, start it with brake engaged, shift to neutral ( if it doesn't do so automatically), set the parking brake, then get off and let it warm up? That's what I do, and I haven't had any problem. I wonder if your engine is idling too fast. Does it pull against the brake at a stoplight?

I have been doing that since this has begun

I have encountered that problem several times. Two things...1) add foam to your fuse box the keep the relays from loosening and 2) shut it off, remove the key, and try again

The relays in the fuse box have a nasty rep for loosening up. By putting foam inside the lid (other users...not my idea) it holds the relays in place

As for the key, sometimes my Spyder just doesn't start right. It stays in 1st gear (which is what it was in when I shut it down). You can either ensure you are in neutral before shutting down OR remove the key and re-insert it.

Oh! It sounded like you were answering another question. Sorry about that chief. See ya in Barstow in May.

You know I have had the same problem with the little Spyder at times not wanting to shift out of gear at start up. This actually happened to me when i picked up my Spyder from a service call at the dealership. So they too then witnessed it. First they checked to ensure the ground wire mod was done, and it was. Then they said it was likely a bad GPS, so they ordered the new part and replaced it. Funny thing was even with the new GPS it did it again one more time. Mind you that was the only time it has done it since the replacement/repair. As indicated above when it does do this, I just turn off the spyder and then wait about 2 mins for the system to reset then restart and it shifts like a charm. Annoying yes, but what are you going to do??? In then end it go's.

I am going to try that foam in the relay fuse box just for good measures. I think I am having a problem with the fuse to my cooling fan as I never seem to feel or hear it kick in.

I haven't encountered the problems you fellows are discussing, possibly because I have had the extra foam in the relay box for some time now. There was one occasion in which I pushed the killbutton while the SE5 was in reverse, and it didn't want to restart or shift out of reverse. I had a 13mm wrench handy, so I reached underneath and shifted the linkage into neutral, then I restarted as usual.

+1 :agree:While it warms up Make SURE you check your Brake Lights and All signals!!
