There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. GPS Mount for my RT

I have a Garmin Nuvi 255W and I would like to mount it to my Spyder for our trip. I have looked at the BPR mount, KewlMetal mount and the TechMount model. I think any of these would work, but what do I use as a cradle or a ball mount to attach the GPS to it. Any ideas?

RAM Mounts makes them for all Garmin units...

Garmin also makes kits for some of their models which includes the ram mount and a power supply usb cable fused.

I used that kit and the kewlmetal bracket

Garmin Nuvi Mount for RT

I ran the Garmin Nuvi 255W on my RT for a year before graduating to the ZUMO 550 this year. Following are the required parts you need to order from a place such as GPS City:

1) Garmin nuvi 200 Series Cradle RAM-HOL-GA25U;
2) RAM Mount Aluminum Diamond mini Plate with 1 inch Ball (attaches to the rear of the cradle);
3) RAM Mount Aluminum Dual 1.0 inch Socket Arm (your choice on length);
4) RAM Mount Aluminum Mini Motorcycle Mount Angled Base with 9mm Hole and 1 inch Ball;
5) Gilsson Nuvi Mio TomTom ONE GPS Direct Wire 12-30v Hardwire Cable

I chose to hardwire the Nuvi directly to the RT's power source with the Gillson cable. (directly to the battery or to a switched power source - your call) The cable was threaded to the unit underneath the RT's tupperware and up through the plastic cap in the handlebars. It simply pops out and can be easily notched to allow for the cable. The Angle Base with 9mm hole and 1 inch Ball was attached to one of the 4 handlebar bolts. (If I remember correctly I reamed out the 9mm hole to 10mm to handle the pass through of the bolt) Some people purchased a longer handlebar bolt and added a spacer when mounting this angle base, but I simply reused the existing handlebar bolt after consulting with my engineer son.:thumbup:

I hope this helps.

Northstar,

What size in mm is the hex wrench needed for the existing bolts on the RT handlebars. 8mm is too big so it must be smaller.

I did forget to mention that I have an Aqua Box for my Nuvi 255W as well, but found that it was much easier just to carry a "baggie" in the glove compartment and slip it over the unit when it rained. My Aqua Box is pretty hefty and I found screen visibility wasn't optimum.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I decided on the Techmount brand and case. Ok, I am not an engineer. Any easy suggestions on hardwire cables to hookup to the GPS to the bike. I need details and what I need to do the job.

Thanks

Sounds like a job for Super Phil...where oh where is Phil?:dontknow:

I installed a power outlet installed in the frunk and routed the gps cable up the steering column (dealer did it for me when they intalled the outlet)

Hardwire Option

You can hardwire a Gilsson Nuvi cable (http://www.gpscity.com/search/q=gilsson) directly to your battery. It comes with the in line fuse. To do so requires that you remove the side panel and upper panel and mirrors on the left side of your bike. After connecting the positive and negative wires to the battery you can run this cable along the side of the gas tank and secure it to the existing bike wiring with small cable ties or tape. Once you reach the area around the acoustic panel you can feed it up and through the pop out insert in the handlebars. I notched the plastic insert for the cable and glued it back into the handlebar center after fishing the cable through the opening. It was a very clean install and easy to do.
