GPS Mount - center of handlebars

Hi there, everyone. A few weeks ago I seen a picture of a Zumo ( I think ) 450 or 550 attached to the center of the steering handlebars, somewhere on the forum.

I have a zumo 450 and I was hoping to mount it in the same place as I recall it being in the photo... ok, so the problem is I've searched the forum but couldn't come up with the picture. :(

Does anybody know which image I'm talking about, or do you have an ideas how a zumo 450 GPS can be mounted in the center of the handle bars?

thank you.

Yeah, I think that is the one!

I've also come across this - mounting the GPS front and center, but it's off the handle bars and on top of the dash: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12717&highlight=front+center

Thanks for your post, I appreciate the link. Now I just need to decide on which of the two methods to use to mount my Zumo 450.

Mounting on the dash may be cool, but I wonder if it is too far away for quick clicks when navigating? Also, wondering if it would be too far to plug-in some head phones. For this method a headphone extension may be a good idea.

Mounting on the handlebars looks more involved then I initially thought.

thanks again for the post.

For those of us that are using the HeliBar Riser -- they have a center insert that fills the hole where the ignition key had been. It has a powerlet outlet and a ball mount. This will produce the same result.

See http://www.helibars.com/product/optional-power-mount-can-am-spyder

Thanks for posting Bill. In my google search for Can-Am Spyder and GPS mount (after searching our forum), I came across that very same unit!

Pretty convenient looking - gps mount and the power outlet, smart idea. I thought about that method, but was not keen on moving the ignition switch at this time.

Thanks for posting.
Cheers.

If you use RAM mounts, like from GPSCity.com, You can use any length of extension you want. Same actually goes for the handlebar, clutch cylinder, or other RAM mounts, so you have quiite a bit of latitude in positioning your GPS. The two pics shown use a 3" RAM extension for my XOG, just to give you an idea. The center mount is off the CHAD adjusting screw.

The ignition switch is not moved.

The installation of the HeliBar riser moves the handlebars up 1" and back 4.5". The installation design leaves the ignition switch exactly where it is -- it does not move.

But there is now a hole in the handlebar where the ignition switch had been. It can be filled with a standard filler that comes with the kit or with the gadget with the powerlet outlet and the ball mount.

I personally like the look of it mounted right in the center of the handlebars, but not where Tharkun mounted his, it's below your field of view. I guess that's okay if you have a GPS that you can hear the directions in your helmet, but that's an expensive set-up to have.

I have a RAM ball mount on my clutch reservoir with an arm to mount mine if I want. I also have a mount attached to the center of my windshield that's right above the center console. It's the perfect height to glance down at while riding. Just my two cents. :)

I put mine on the right side handlebar...sits up high enough...works great...anywhere you put the gps, it's a great thing to have, esp. if you link it to your bluetooth phone, music, etc...

I mounted mine on the windshield bracket - it's right over the instruments & it does not move with the bars.... perfect there (for me).

Spydergirl: Thanks for the reply. I've been thinking about on the dash, but not attached to the windshield. I'll likely keep my stock windshield, so bolting my Zumo to the dash maybe a good option for me, however, I would like to adjust it a little lower then in this picture - but this picture is the rough position I'm thinking about - seems like its 3-4 screws / nuts/bolts and mount the flat ball plate and the included extension arm that came with the Zumo:

Bone Crusher: I agree - I have to get my GPS on my Spyder, when I get it. I love my Zumo 450 and have used it to it quite a bit in the past ( music, routes, proximity alerts, etc… but no bluetooth).

Thanks guys.

This is almost exactly how I have mine, but I have a larger windshield so I just drilled holes into that and mounted it from the windshield instead.

Bluetooth is great for music and phone...I can't hear the music much anyway and I talk on the phone as little as possible. I've developed a very fond appreciation of paying attention to any/everything when I ride...less distractions are good not only for cars, but for bikes too...

I highly recommend POIfactory.com. You can get red light camera and speed camera data for the whole country and load it easily onto your garmin device. For $20.00 a year, it's really worth. In the socialist republic of Maryland, we have cameras everywhere...it's nice to know in advance when you are coming up to one...

GPS MOUNT

Dang, I see everything on here but a center handle bar mount for an RT. I have a Zumo 660 and would kill to get info for mounting it on an RT the way it is in all the picture/brochures. I have asked my dealer and he hasn't a clue. I called Garmin and they say that they make a special interface for BRP but I would have to call my dealer.. You know the drill...sort of like a dog chasing it's tail. Anyone have a clue?? Len

I do have a good idea here, but it will require a longer bolt and some machine work to make a spacer, in all likelihood. Haven't had my RT-S long enough to get the work done and confirm the method. Should be similar to the BMW mounts that replace one of the handlebar mounting bolts. Can't do it yet as the RT-S had to return to the dealer for correction of some problems.

As to the interface, you are probably out of luck with full integration unless you use the BRP system. Not sure if their mount will be available separately, either. I haven't looked under the plug on the handlebars yet, but there may be place to tap power there. Matters not to me, as I intend to install Powerlet outlets ASAP, but I'll research it as soon as the RT-S gets back home and the weather permits.
