Good trip - Learned a few things

I just got back from a 3 day, 1,214 mile trip on my RTS from Iowa to the North Shore of lake Superior, the Canadian border and back home. One other RT (Limited), a Kawasaki Councourse, and a Harley Sportster. Great weather, bike ran fantastic. :yes: A few things I brought away from my trip:

1. You can get 156 miles per fill when running premium gas even though you might have run some triple digit speeds now and then.
2. When it takes 156 miles to find a station you can fit 5.875 gallons in the tank to the fill vent.
3. I do not recommend trying to re-enact this feat.
3. Spyders still get a lot of attention up north near their homeland. Many, many questions.
4. Numerous other Spyder owners have NOT heard about Spyderlovers. Add some farkles and you will find out who they are.
5. Airhawk R seat cushion was a blessing. Worth the money.
6. Cornering on these things is just outstanding! Left the other bikes in the dust. Kawasaki is faster the straightaways but no contest in the curves.

Learned alot of other stuff in the bars and little towns we visited but some just isn't suitable for posting.

It is hard to take your eyes off the odometer when you get beyond the 140 mile mark! I'm glad you made it to the station in time. Sounds like you had a great trip.

Sounds like you had a great trip. We were in Ely, MN at the end of July. Didn't see any other Spyders at all. My RT ran great with no problems at all.

162 miles over Monarch Pass - 4.7 gals.

Finished the last leg coming in from Western Colorado yesterday. Stopped and filled up in Gunnison CO with mid grade and got in with one bar left on the digital guage. One of the better mileage runs - I think the SM5 liked the cooler temps in the mountains and moderate speeds through the twisties. Maybe our 2011 RT is finally getting broke in at 31,000 miles

Glad you enjoyed the trip. The North Shore is some of my old stomping grounds. Lived at French River for a while. Halfway between Duluth and Two Harbors. Did a lot of fishing on the Gunflint Trail so drove the Grand Marais section a zillion times. Very beautiful country along the whole drive to Thunder Bay and beyond. The towns and bars along the way are definately what makes a trip like that interesting. :thumbup:

We also did a ride about 700 miles and yes once you pass 140 and still see the gas stations closed at the towns you saw on the GPS and still see that the next station is 20 miles out you then say oh $h!) no what. but we made it with fumes. it was less then 20 by the way, more like 16.

That is interesting that you would try to go that far without refueling. I have a fear that the next tank I would get 125 miles and run out gas. I bought a 1.4gal gas can (plastic) that just fits my saddlebag and should I be so foolish as to try to beat the odds I have plan B.:yes::yes::yes:

:agree: I seldom go over 120-130. If a trip takes five fills no matter whether you stop at 125 or 150, then you might as well have piece of mind that comes with the sooner fills. It costs no more to fill every 100 miles than it does to fill every 150. Go by what your Spyder seems to use and what you are comfortable with.

Most newer cars do not want you to run the fuel level excessively low because it can cause the fuel pump to overheat and fail. Does anybody know it out Spyders are subject to the same issue.

I am with Scotty on the concept of 120 to 130 miles between fill ups. My bike will do 100 to 110 miles on the top 1/2 of the gage. The next 20 to 30 miles will bring it to the low fuel warning. I don't run it that low often but, I was curious if we had a similar risk of damage like a car of truck would ?

I have not heard of any damage to the Spyder fuel pumps from running low.

I just put about 1,000 miles on my '13 RT this past week and agree with others that 140 miles is where you start to push the limits. Got about 30 mpg+/-. Low fuel lite came on just under 130 miles. At 140 I put 5.0 gal. in the tank. Had to push the last tank out to 150 and put 5.5 gal in the tank. Because it was my first trip out on the road, I did take 1 gal Reda in the saddle bag for peace of mind but didn't have to use it. Used no oil and the machine ran perfectly. Great trip! BTW, what do ya'll use for GRASSHOPPER REPELLENT?? :dontknow:

Thanks for the info! I'm retiring as of the end of this week and plan on doing a LOT more touring. This thread has confirmed my expectations re refueling. I plan to make 125 my marker.
