Good Days and Bad

Today was an interesting day. Started out rainy and cold, like so many of our days this summer. No matter, I had to go to the doctor anyway. That didn't turn out so good. A couple of weeks ago, I did a slow speed tip-over on rough pavement at Mid-Ohio during Vintage Motorcycle Days. My Simplex bobber is so low to the ground that when the motor plate dug in and stopped me suddenly, I couldn't get my foot past the crash bars and onto the ground in time. I dislocated my thumb when we (Scotty & Simplex) fell on top of it. I couldn't work the throttle, and certainly wasn't going to push it back to the other side of the track and the campground, so I pulled it into joint and continued. I thought I was recovering reasonably well. The pain was less and the swelling was down, but after the puffiness was gone it looked funny to me, acted kinda weird, and some things still hurt terribly. I couldn't turn a key or lift a mug, for instance. They believe I ruptured a ligament, leaving one side of the joint unattached. An MRI next week will tell the tale for certain. If it is ruptured, it will need surgery, slowing me down for a while. The worst part, other than this being a bad time to have surgery (I have a pole barn to build for the new house), is that they had to put a splint on it to protect it, lest it tear some more. I cannot grip a throttle or bend my wrist. Looks like my riding is done for a while. Boo, hiss! :(

The day was not a total loss, however. We broke ground for the new house today...the excavator put up the silt fence, started cutting a driveway, and scraped the topsoil off the house site. If the bank will hurry up and finalize the loan, we should be able to have the precast foundation in place in a couple of weeks. That would let us get the shell up, closed in, and the half-log siding installed before the snow flies. Now if I can just figure out how to hold a nail gun so I can do the barn.

So sorry to hear of your accident, Scotty...that certainly didn't come at a good time for you. (Of course, there's NEVER a good time for that, when it comes right down to it). We'll keep our fingers crossed that surgery won't be necessary. Soft tissue injuries are the worst, as far as keeping you down longer than you think they will. I'd send Ed up there to help with the pole barn, but we're on "twin watch" lately...33 1/2 weeks and counting. His daughter just closed on her new house today, so Ed will be tied up cleaning, changing locks, etc., for awhile. We're still hoping to go to Memphis next week sometime to pick up our new Can-Am trailer. Can't wait. Hugs to you and Nancy, from both of us.

Sorry about your thumb,,,,but good on the breaking ground on the house.....pole barn can wait

Even if we didn't have a barn raising I'm pretty sure we could come up with a few folks who would move your cycle collection to the new house for you. Hope you heal soon.

Sorry to hear about your thumb. Your luck sounds as good as mine and your timing spot on. I broke my thumb right before we moved, so I had to do everything gimpy style. I managed to move three full sized U-hauls with one other to help, then hung 23 sets of blinds, installed ceiling fans, light fixtures, microwave, dishwasher, stove and a pot rack, which required crawling through the attic with tools. Industrial Velcro was my friend. I'd hold things with my left hand and screw them in with with the drill velcro'd to my right.

I used weight lifters wrist straps to hold on to dollys, etc. during the move. It's a beast being broken, but with some creativity and bullheadedness things can get done. Hopefully you can still get things done, even if gimpy style. :(

Boo hiss on injury .. Yippee on breaking ground .. Agree pole barn a must do .. Knowing your ingenuity I see a nail gun adaptor soon in your future. Go Scotty!!!!

:gaah:........sorry to hear about your accident but I know that you will figure out someway to work around the problems!:2thumbs: We will keep you in our prayers for a fast recovery.:pray:

Bummer on the health problems Scotty.... Follow the your medical professionals guidelines until you feel better then go for it.:helpsmilie:

Here's hoping the MRI shows positive results. Do you have an alternative location lined up for your collection if the pole barn has to wait until spring?

Sorry to hear about your thumb and not being able to ride for awhile. Happy to hear things are moving along with your new house...sending good thoughts and prayers that the bank gets into gear so you can really get things done. Take care, and thanks for keeping us posted on your progress.

Dang Scotty, not good news. Praying for a quick recovery. Was thinking, I haven't been to Michigan in many years. I have raised Cain but never a pole barn. Like Roger said, it would be nice to join together to for a barn raisin'.

Not sure if I should say this, I had surgery on my left thumb in 2011. I was out 14 weeks. Oddly enough, the procedure is referred to as an "anchovy". But then, mine wasn't the result of a sprain. It was over arthritis from over use.

blessing in disguise?

sorry to hear of your injury, this might keep you from doing something that you shouldn't be doing .:dontknow:i know you are a gettin it done kind of guy. maybe you can find a couple of interns to help, and run the nail gun left handed.

Bummer Scotty. I hope the MRI shows otherwise.
I dislocated my shoulder about 15 years ago. It took a long time to get better and I did not need surgery.
To this day I still have some discomfort from time to time.

Hope you get back on the horse soon!

Bob

Sorry to hear about your accident and thumb injury. Hope and pray you heal without the need for surgery. Sure wish I lived a little closer so I could help with the pole barn. Never built a pole barn...it sounds like fun. Take care. Let us know how we can help!

well scotty, at least you don't have to use your thumb to answer every ones problems here at spyderlovers! heal fast my friend and take it easy on that thumb. by the way, as funny as it may sound, those Velcro straps work well!
