Going to Magog next week.

Stationed in Germany, learned German. Stationed in England, learned UK english. Stationed in SEA, learned some Thai, Vietnamese and Laotion. Can't speak hardly any of those languages now. I do agree that if you are going to live in another country then learn to speak the language. Am laa for now.
Quebec is not a country, It is a province in the country of Canada :doorag:

Uhh yeah, I knew that. Just generalizing. The company I work for has reps all over Canada. We have an office/shop in Mississauga, and Toronto. My former manager was French Canadian, spoke english and treated me very well. Great guy and I miss him since he retired.

I can see why some would be upset not being able to understand the french language while visiting the Magog. I also believe that, when you are visiting the country, or province, there should be someone you can find to help translate for you, especially when it is an event such as this. There is a difference living in another country, or province, and just visiting. I lived in Spain back in the 70's, and I learned the language, so I would be able to get around the country and understand their language. Just hope and pray for travel blessings for all! :chat:

Procrastinated long enough

Well I've been on the fence too long, so finally booked hotel (Hotel Cherlbourg, Magoog Oxford) today and going to ride up Friday morning.

I have not registered or know whats going on but figured I would just arrive and wing it, or should I say 'Spyder it' since I traded my wing.

Going up for somewhere/something to ride/do, like my wife said I would just be putting around local roads at the weekend wishing I had gone.

Going to ride up i495 to lowell, take route 3/i93 to Concord NH, then 89 to white river junction, then 91 into Canada.

I will try and leave around 7-7.30am Friday, should reach Magog by 1-1.30 in the afternoon, happy to meet up with anyone along the way.

Will report back when I get home.

Should be fun, might not do parade will see.

Wow, what does it say about us when we expect people from another country to accommodate us by speaking English? That is simply ridiculous. A big part of the joy of traveling for me is experiencing other cultures. I also go prepared. In the old days I would learn key phrases in the native language. Nowadays I just use the speaking translator app in my smart phone. Works wonders.

Hey Lamonster.....start a new thread and tell us po folks what happening in Magog....pics and video....

Well, I am more than happy to speak french or english to any of you who are coming up to Quebec who wants to visit the Elka shop.

:agree:, When I travel for business or leisure to another country I don't expect them to speak English and I try my best to get by. However when at certain international events normally there conducted multilingual.

I don't know if Magog is touted as an International event or not, if it is not then they are perfectly correct in conducting it in their local language. If they want to attract Spyders from the US then one would have thought they would cater a little more. If I was to go I would not be too worried once I got there, always get by some how. With the lack of information in English then I assume it is not an official international event but US spyders are obviously welcome.

Maybe 2013 the US spyderfest should set a precedent and have translator there for French and Spanish. I can translate into British for you, welcome spyder friends to welcome spyder mates, sort of thing :roflblack:

:agree: But us Americans tend to think the whole world should think and talk like we do....;). I wouldn't expect to go to a predominate French speaking area and not brush up on my French or use a translator on my iPhone.

In Durango they did speak some french during some of the speeches ... but offered a translation... but they spoke English 99% of the time otherwise while on stage etc.

Other countries are not a melting pot of various immigrants and cultures like the USA is. We have people that speak various languages like no other country. I'll agree that if you want to get ahead here in the USA you should speak good English (and that goes for the punks that speak horrible sloppy English too).. but there's nothing wrong with accommodating those with limited English skills either... it's smart business.

Interesting note: Air Traffic control around the entire world speaks English.... no matter where they are... Japan.. Germany... Russia... they communicate in English.

I'm not sure how many US SpyderLovers plan on going but I'll be up there most of next week so look for a report back here with pics, videos and blogs about the event. :doorag:

not able to make it, but look forward to your videos and write ups:thumbup:

Well said!!! I'm getting very aggravated with all these people bitching about the language. If they can't accept the language wherever they are going they should stay home!!!! They speak French in Quebec, just get with the program and quit crying!!!

I've been to the Magog event and I am one of those that do not understand the issue people have with the language. I spoke to quite a few French Canadians there (both Spyder owners and otherwise). They would first ask me in French if I spoke French (I got that much out of it at least, I did take a semester of French in High School). And when I sad no, I speak only English they would then talk to me in English.

THEY were the ones who have gone to the trouble to learn MY Language. I think that is commendable. How many of us are fluent 2 languages?

They were very nice, very polite and I had a very good time. There were a few that indicated that they could not speak English and we were both sad that we were not able to communicate.

Does anyone remember 'When in Rome...'? :dontknow:

It's not very often, but sometimes Spyderlovers dissappoint me.
