Godzilla with a wrench

Went out this afternoon to do my first oil change on the 2010 Spyder RS I bought last spring. The fellow I bought it from had changed the oil before I took possession of it. 3K down the road and time to explore the oil change and then... Godzilla had a wrench. Unbuttoned everything and went to take the drain plug from the oil tank and... so tight I could not budge it. With things that tight... I buttoned it back up and will let a dealer hit it with heat or something so that I don't strip the first plug to pull. I hate it when people think they have to tighten things as tight as they can. Grrrrr. Let's see how much this oil change will cost me. Sigh.

Frustrated in WI

Tap the plug loose with a chisel on the edge of it. It will come out with a few good taps. You need to have the Spyder jacked up high enough to get a good swing under it. It it has plastic covers in the way they have to be removed before you can tap it out.

Some penetrating oil... went for a ride and let it cool. Got a longer breaker bar. Tapped the hex socket lightly with a hammer. Grunted like Schwarzenegger in his younger years and it finally let go. Threads are okay. Finally! Thankful for small victories for sure! Anyone know on the RS what size the oil tank drain plug is? Would rather put a regular bolt there, instead of the hex bolt. I ordered an engine drain plug to replace the stock that has a regular bolt head from Lamonster. Thinking I could get the oil tank from an auto parts place locally. Thanks for the good help, everyone.

This is with BRP blended... thought it was 3k? I'll change it out now that I have it opened up and bolts loose... but did they lengthen the spec from the manual? Going to synthetic this time, so will feel comfortable going out to 5k with it. Thanks.

No the 1330 motors are 9,000. Yes the factory issued a revision on the 998 motors to 4600. BTW Value accessories has a set of bolt head drain bolts for $6.95 each. I have a set and they work very well. Good on ya for not giving up and finding a way to conqueror Godzilla.

Yes it was changed to 4,600 miles but it won’t hurt to change it early. Consider changing to a synthetic like Amsoil or Spectro. Get your kits from Bajaron or Lamonster.

Oil change done. Now we'll see how it does over a higher mile service schedule than this 3k change. The oil that came out, BRP blend 4t, looked pretty darn done and black. Still, it did its job, there was no metal on the drain plug magnet. Glad that oil changes will now be once a year task. Putting Lamonster's highway peg/brackets on this spring and losing the underbelly pans, made getting at stuff really simple. I put in 4 quarts... and it is a bit above add on the stick. Everyone says run it there to half way, or you start pushing oil out of places that you don't want it to go. Thanks for all your help and encouragement everyone!
