The main deck is 80-100 feet above sea level on modern carriers so no, no way could they spew water that high. A destroyer can do it but the fantail is only 8-12 feet above sea level and destroyers can get their aft section lifted way out of the water in big rollers.

I didn't listen to the audio. Do they say how fast it was moving? Back in the early 70's I worked at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory. They designed the nuclear reactors that powered the USS Enterprise. A fellow coworker who served on the Enterprise said one day they got into a race with a Russian submarine. Both Captains decided to call it off at about 40 knots. Neither one wanted to disclose how fast they actually could go! The Enterprise had 8 nuclear reactors, two for catapulting and the rest for propulsion.

Yea. I know a carrier can do that, I was on board when they did it during sea trials. Luckily there were no aircraft on deck at the time. It was a riot eating lunch during the maneuvers too. Trays sliding all over the place.

If you do a little searching on the web, you will find people who have been on a modern carrier that say they can go 45+ knots. Its probably closer to 60. My dad was on the Oriskany aircraft carrier in vietnam(non-nuke) and it would do 35+knots. They say the aircraft carriers are the fastest ships in the Navy fleet and can outrun their carrier group at flank speed. Its possible I guess. When you hear on the news that one of our carriers left port in Virginia for the persian gulf and they arrive there in 2 to 3 days, I would say they are FAST! There are other videos of carriers at full speed that are more amazing!

I was on the USS Bainbridge DLGN25 which was acting as flight guard for the USS Enterprise when it caught fire (1969) and made a run for Pearl Harbor. We were supposed to try to follow it in. Yeah, right. It appeared on the left horizon as we tried to intercept it, but it disappeared over the other horizon within an hour. Was in port and docked by the time we got there. Would not be possible without nuclear power propulsion systems.

I dunno. My WWII era destroyer operated with a host of carriers during Vietnam and we always had to send a message to the boys on the birdfarm that we were underway. They'd finally catch on three days later. hyea:

Back then, the USS Enterprise was the only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The conventional (bunker oil) powered carriers could not run at full power for very long without having to refuel whereas the Enterprise could literally steam at full power for a year or more without refueling.
