GIVI SR770 tailrack installed

Here are some pics and notes on installing the new Givi SR770 Monokey Tailrack, which allows mounting of all the Givi Monokey topcases to the Spyder.

Here's the kit

Four holes have to be drilled in the stock tailpiece with a 3/8 drill and then enlarged to oval shape with a Dremel tool. Probably the touchiest part of the installation

givispyder--stelvio004.jpg

Taillights should not be removed prior to installing the lower frame supports as the rearmost taillight screws cannot be replaced once brackets are mounted.
Keep the Dremel handy, as after replacing the plastic tailpiece minor adjustment of holes may be needed.
don't worry about the holes being slightly oversize as they will be covered by the upper mounting brackets once installed. I believe I'd fill the area around the holes in the plastic tailpiece with some clear silicone to keep water out of the tail, though I doubt the area is waterproof anyway, and all electrical connections are waterproof already.

Finished product (The Moto Guzzi Norge sport tourer in the background is the donor for the topcase in the pictures)

Givi 52L Maxia case mounted. The R300 optional color perfectly matches Spyder, Guzzi, and Ducati red!!

The Maxia will fit two full face helmets. Optional light kit, metal toprack, padded backrest can be mounted to case at extra cost. They can be moved from vehicle to vehicle with the twist of a key and the push of a button.

I have been looking for a decent looking luggage rack to mount similarly. I have no real desire for the topcase itself. I seldom use the one on my BMW R1100RT now that Nancy has her Spyder, and we don't ride two-up anymore. I can't tell from the pictures, but will bungees readily hook underneath this rack? I'd like more of a middle, but if this will give some support for a bag, and a place to attach some straps, I might go for it. BTW, I love the red Norge! Almost bought one myself.

Instructions and kit are for mounting to the frame of the Spyder. This rack will not mount to the BRP sport rack. GIVI has a universal tailrack that could be mounted to the Spyder rack, but it has a bit of a "cobbled" look and doesn't match the lines of the machine as nicely as this one. Someone on Spydertalk posted pics of an install a while ago, and I'm sure it could be found by searching.

Now, if you're talented at fabricating, you could get just the GIVI baseplate included with this kit and make your own mounting parts for the BRP rack. It's the little lip on the back of the BRP Sportrack that complicates the install, but the proper length nylon spacers (any hardware store) would probably solve that part of the install.

No built-in bungee points on the SR770. They could be added by putting steel inserts and bungee spools or screw eyes in existing holes not already used for mounting maybe(?)
Thanks for the kind words on the Norge. It's probably my favorite Goose, though you probably noticed a couple others lurking in the shop.

That's too bad. I really like the looks. I was hoping it would be hollowed out underneath so it could snag a bungee. BRP's sport rack has the same, sleek style, so it is useless, too. That's why we ordered one but didn't purchase it once it came in. Guess the choice comes down to fabricating something myself, or modifying something like this. I have no use for a topcase right now, but it's nice to have the option. We may still go this route...it looks like it belongs there.

I did notice the other Guzzis there. You need to put some pics in your personal album, like they persuaded me to do. The red Norges are still so beautiful they almost make me cry, though. One of my all-time favorites.

:agree: Yes, the Norge is without doubt one of the most esthetically pleasing motorcycle designs I have ever seen. It looks "just right" and in red, well, it really floats my boat. :thumbup:If I win the lottery, I will be making room for one in my garage next to my Spyder.

Actually the SR770 rack IS hollow underneath, I thought you were looking for dedicated bungee points. I'm sure it would hold hooks, but maybe check one for yourself. They're using that baseplate for most of their rear racks now. I'll try to take a pic from underneath, maybe on the Norge or Stelvio so you can judge for yourself whether it would meet your needs/wants. I'll put a standard bungee hook on or measure the depth at deepest and shallowest, whichever would be most helpful.

Now that I have paid the VISA bill with the Givi V35 cases and PLX770 rack, I can begin the next phase. While I'm not a fan of the large top cases, I see that Givi has a small one (E260) that would probably fit nicely on the sportrack if I can McGiver a mount for it. When my wife is on board, the BRP backrest is always there. When she's not and I'm off on a trip, it would be nice just to click the sportrack on with the Givi case attached. I'd like to see a photo of the "universal mounting rack" that comes with the case to see if a few holes drilled in the sportrack with some spacers to clear the back lip would be a way to possibly attach the case or if I would still have to order the E250 universal mount kit.

If they claim a universal mounting rack comes with the case, it's almost certainly the E250, as that is Givi's description for that part. I wasn't aware, however, that Givi included any kind of mount with their cases. I think I'd contact Givi USA to make sure. Their universal mount basically would mount on a generic or oem type tubular rack found on many motorcycles. It would not mount directly to plastic bodywork.

Here's a link to an install that was done with a Givi Monolock case on Spydertalk. Obviously posted before the dedicated Givi Spyderstuff came out. I'd probably go for nylon spacers over gnawing out a part of the plate to achieve level mounting.

Note: Monolock and Monokey series are NOT the same. Monolock stuff, though well-made, mounts differently and is NOT as durable or strong as the Monokey line.
My comment above about mounts not coming with the cases refers to Monokey stuff. I have a feeling the case you're referencing is in the Monolock line. Good used Monokey cases turn up on ebay reasonably regularly, and good savings can be had. The E460 's (46 liter)and Maxia's (52L) are probably my favorites.

Another excellent quality topcase brand is the German-made Hepco & Becker. Also US distributors and dealers. No dedicated mounts for Spyder yet, AFAIK.

John,

Thanks for the link. The E260 is monolock and the product spec says it does come with universal mount plate. It comes in the Givi gloss silver which is dead on with Spyder silver. The link shows exactly what I'd like to do to make the sport plate with Givi mount and case quickly interchangeable with the backrest. Now just need to find another $200.

Hi John,
I just installed the same setup you have with the addition of built in lights on the case.

Anyone have any wiring tips; The Spyder taillights have three wires (ground,running,brake-I guess) and the GIVI only has two.

I have this on my kewlmetal rack, looks and works great !
On hot days, makes great waffles as well :)

Hey I resemble that remark!! That is me , I did that install way before there were any racks available before our long trip to homecoming. :D I tried spacers but it looked funky and was not as sturdy. I had two givi base plates so the cut-out was no risk. It has since covered thousands of miles under harsh use with no fatigue or problems . I however like the new setup , however theres a big price difference and if you already have the spyder rear rack.....
Anyways, Monolock cases come with the universal mount , monokey cases do not. They are two different animals monokey being their premium line and monlock their regular line and again , priced very differently.
I have a top of the line Hepco & Becker setup on my Buell Ulysses and while nice , they are NOT as high quality as the Givi Monokey line, more in line with the monolock. (My opinion only after using both manufacturers many miles)

Looks sharp. I hope someone comes out with a mount that will snap into the BRP rack - the same way that the backrest snaps in.
