• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Hi everyone. After 21 years on BMW bikes I have taken the plunge. So far I've had a 10 minute demo ride which was scary. Tomorrow I have a 50 mile ride home on twisty roads which should sort me out. It's an RT Limited in grey. Wish me luck. Looking forward to getting lots of info here.

Exciting!

Wow! That's awesome! Congratulations! :yes:You're gonna love it!! And, you'll learn a lot here on spyderlovers.com!

I too spent several years on an BMW RT and liked it a lot. I had a 35 mile ride home on a four lane road when I bought my Spyder in January and I think I used every lane on the ride home. What have I went and got myself into, no way I can ride this thing!! I now have 5000 miles on it and I am driving Nanny nuts riding the twisty roads in our area. You will get the hang of it and when you do you will have a blast.

Making the switch

I started out thinking I wanted an R/T that was a converted Goldwing platform - so I test drove a few, most felt jumpy, esp if they had 17" or greater front wheels. Fortunately a garbage truck mushed my Goldwing while it was parked so I test drove a spyder while I was waiting for insurance to cough up and settle. The Spyder platforms perform much better than the converted Honda's in my estimation. Plus there is REVERSE a true reverse so it makes parking etc... sooooo much easier.
I don't like my spyder better than my two wheeled platforms, very different creatures however I am enjoying the Spyder for all it's differences.

Looks like I'm in for an interesting day. There don't seem to be many of them this side of the pond so all the more fun. And thanks for all your comments. I will report back tomorrow, hopefully.

Welcome to Spyder-dom (Spyder + kingdom). After your new RT gets used to you, it will be more fun than you ever imagined.

Welcome welcome....

to both the spyder world and this most unique site. Congrats on a fine choice of ryde...:2thumbs: your ryde home should warm you up but you will have a great time getting aquainted with your ryde....:ohyea:

:welcome: and :congrats: on your impending Spyder-ness!

There's a thread here about do's or don'ts of Spyder ryding. I strongly recommend you read it before you set off on your way home. (It's long so give it some time.)

And when you get it home don't forget to post a pic here. We trust you, but nothing really happened if it's not in a pic!

50 miles to get "sorted" ? haha that's a good one. Just stay on the right side of the road, which is to say the "left" and don't explore all of your power, before exploring the handling and braking aspect of your new ryde. Stay safe, and dry when you can.
(oh yeah, get a mud flap if you think you'll be out in the wet. RT roostertail backwash is REAL)

:welcome: and :congrats:

Prairie Spyder has you covered on reading the Do's and Don'ts.

One other thing, a light grip on the handlebars. Don't over control or you will think :spyder2: has a mind of its own.

WELCOME

WELCOME to the party.....
we are all thrilled that you choose a SPYD3R.... HOWEVER, PLEASE don't expect it to handle like a 2 wheeler.... more like a snowmobile....
after a couple hundred miles/kilometers, you'll really start loving it.... report back often as to how your progress goes....
ride safely and enjoy....

I did the same 10 minute test ride, but the ride home was only about 35 miles on a 2 lane road, white knuckle time. But I made it and now have 25K miles on my 2012 RT-S. I wouldn't go back to 2 wheels now.

After over 30 years on Goldwings, I bought a Spyder. Before buying, I rode a friends for about 5 minutes. Real different. Found a pretty good deal on a used 2014 RT Ltd. with matching 622 trailer and less that 10K miles. I picked it up in Tulsa, OK and rode it home to Mesa, AZ staying mainly off the interstates. I had to be mindful of the weather as there were Tornados in the Oklahoma area. The tornadoes missed me but I did experience high winds (40-50MPH) for much of the way. I have ridden 2 wheelers in that kind of weather but was not at all at ease with it. The Spyder provided a much more stable platform. After a couple hundred miles I knew that I made the right decision. After the 1200 mile trip, the Spyder and I got to know each other well. No looking back and no regrets. I will also echo what others have said and highly recommend the "Dos and do nots" thread as good information....

Congratulations and good luck
