• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Gas questions

I just got my 2012 RT-S SM5 this past Saturday. I have noticed that after going for a ride on it, i park it in the garage, and a short time later there is an overwhelming smell of gasoline in the garage. This happened when I first got it home but the smell Went away by the next morning. I took it out today for a short ride and it's back again! It's only got 150 miles on it, so, could this just be a part of the break in? I dont see gas pooling on the floor under it and dont see any leaks anywhere.

Question #2:

Is premium gasoline an absolute neccesity in the Spyder or just recommended? Any complications or am i asking for trouble later if i use low octane?

:welcome: if you overfill the Spyder you will definitely smell gas fumes. Try searching on evap canister and you should find a number of threads on this subject. Enjoy

up to you

used premium got 33 to 35 mph per gal. then try highest grade got 37 mph. then one dealer went to told lower ones get less miles per gal. about smelling gas you might overfilled it. they told me don't do that from heat it will expand it.then run to the charcoal filter the hurt it.

:congrats: on the new ryde. The gas smell may be from overfilling. RE: Octane: we have had several threads and the opinions are all across the board. I have used the highest octane in all four of my :spyder2:'s. In AK that would be 91 octane. No ethanol here either. IMO: the :ani29: seems more responsive and I actually get the best mpg from the higher octane. When forced to use less than 91 the :spyder2: seems like it got bad gas or something like that.

Be sure to fill slowly, too, especially near the top. Filling too fast can also force gas out the vent to the evap canister.

Regarding " yanksskins " post:
He's not interested in Miles per Gallon.........He's interested in M P H per gallon....:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:....Mike

GAS QUESTIONS

I've had my RT for just over two years I've gas'd up with 87 to 93. What I've found is that the higher the octane the better the performance. I can feel it in the way the bike responds and the way it sounds.. The Lower the octane the rougher it sounds and performs. I dont think about it anymore, pull in fill up with high test. It's about the ride, not about the cost for me.

:agree: Besides, on a four gallon re-fuel; how much extra is it really going to cost anyway?

that would depend upon going to the local store or riding Many hundred's of miles and the speed in which you travel.

For my short and long rides I seldom get more than 28 MPG. The very best I got was 32 at 45-50 mph with very limited starts and stops..

congratulations!

:congrats::2thumbs: :ohyea:bought my RT A&C in April have almost 11k on it, and only until recently now the weathers cooled down, I notice that smell bad when I pull in the garage. Reading numerous posts on it here, gas actually boils in the tank in hot weather unless the tank is full, then less so, so I try to keep it full and have been using Startron gas additive in every tank. but I still have a hard time deciding how full is full when filling. we don't have any pure gas in these parts so the startron hopefully is helping. :dontknow: if it's hot and seems like it's been especially so since I bought it this year, I've been using a box fan on my rig till it cools down, then i close the garage door.

You should always use the manufacturer's recommended octane fuel for any combustion machine.

The Rotax engine has been designed to run on higher octane. Lower octane can cause "pinging" (which can cause damage); lower performance; and lower gas-mileage. (This is the same for any engine when not using the recommend octane.)

Also, octane affects the "firing" of the fuel in the piston (which is what the "ping" is). Too low of octane and it will not "fire" as designed. Do that for long enough, and you'll eventually discover the true cost of "cheaper" fuel.

Besides... as mentioned... your performance/power is not as good with lower octane fuel. Why would anyone want that?

You can use 89 octane or up to 93; but at lease stay within that range. Cost shouldn't be in your consideration of which fuel to use.
