:yikes: WHOA WAIT A MINUTE!!!! I was told by the dealer to use 93 octane :banghead:...are you guys telling me that I can use 87 or even 89??? I am currently getting 33 mgh city and 38 mpg highway at 55-60 mph. Please advise, I would love to save some $$$ at the gas station!
The minimum and the recommended octane are listed in your owner's manual and on the emissions label under the seat. I'd use the recommended fuel listed. Use of the minimum grade can reduce performance...at least on the RT with certain fuel brands and in certain localities.

I have put over 2k miles on my 2012 RS-S since I brought her home 3 weeks ago. I put 87 in my tank and use her to commute. I have been getting between 28 - 33 mpg. I get better mileage when I am not commuting, for obvious reasons. I was told by the dealer to use 87, now I am curious if I would get better gas mileage if I use a higher octane?

On my trip to Spyderfest I averaged 31.6 mpg. Over 65 mph mpg dropped significantly. I use the highest octane available. Ethynol definitely decreases mpg. Somebody pulled the wool over the government eye. With ethanol you burn more gas not less and the efficiency of the engine is hurt. Would like to see 93 oct and no alcohol mixture back again. I wonder what it would be like if we had a choice??:(

It's a well-known fact that the P.E. bikes were actually "test mules" for final throttle bottle calibration runs... :roflblack:

That... and your right wrist is probably bigger around than most people's biceps...

Higher octane gas generally provides poorer gas mileage...unless the machine is designed to run on the higher octane gas and that is what is recommended. The higher octane fuel has a low heat capacity (less energy per unit volume). Simple physics...you can't cheat physics, at least not for long.

My .02 worth seem like we have beat this gas mileage horse to death more then a few times. Did we get our spy for the gas mileage or for the fun of being able to ride a machine way ahead of its time. If I wanted gas mileage I would have bought a smart car lol, and problem cut the roof off, ride and have fun mileage is the secondary thing to me.:yes:roflmao

:agree: But the topic will continue to rear its ugly head as long as folks who are new to Spyders are pulling into gas stations...
My Son's Fiesta gets a consistent 48 mpg on his commute to work... But it's just a cheap Ford! I'll take my Spyder's 32 to 37 mpg runs ANY time!

:agree::agree:Why don't we ask Lamonster to make the mileage thing a sticky so someone can post on it everyday. As long as he's at it, make the "what kind of oil" a sticky as well.

What other threads don't want to go away?
Tire pressures
Helmet usage
Why other bikers don't wave back?
Is waving necessary anyway?
Who waves?
What is the correct waving style?

Hey Texasride, like you said, WE'RE ALL NOT YOU my friend - just my .02

While we are ALL entitled to OUR opinions, we ALL didn't buy the Spyder for the same reason. Take me for instance. The Spyder is my DAILY DRIVER, anywhere & everywhere Teddy & I go, its on his Red Sled, year round. Seeing as I'm NOT independantly wealthy, I have to budget my meager earnings. The better fuel economy I can get out of Teds Red Sled, means thats more money we have for more road-trips & more ryding. I guess if we were like most, that use their Spyders as a "TOY" and only rode a couple thousand miles a year, I wouldn't care about fuel economy either. But, we're doing about 25,000 miles a year on Teds Red Sled, and you add into that the expense of proper maintenance, and it all adds up quickly. So if someone has suggestions that we haven't tried on how to better fuel economy, I'm ALL FOR IT, Post Away:thumbup:

:lecturef_smilie:Hey now Bob, yur hit'n close to home there buddy. I resemble that remark:roflblack:

In the first 250 miles on the RT, I am averaging (combined city/highway) about 36. Sounds like I should be pretty happy with this based on what others are reporting.

I didn't say that it was a lousy Ford... :roflblack: I guess what I meant was that I'd rather be on my Spyder than in pretty much any of the econo-crapbox cars... But that's just me!

YES SIR!!! Heck, Teddy & I would be dancing in the streets if we got that:yes::yes:

any of the econo-crapbox cars... But that's just me!

Bob, you slay me :roflblack::roflblack: Don't tell, but I agree 100% :rolleyes::thumbup:

I'm getting about 32-33 with my RS and one thing I noticed is that when I first got the Spyder I was only getting 27-28 and it improved after I got about 3k on the scoot...I drive rather aggressively and I've got the Hindle exhaust with the 0-2 modifier with a K&N filter...not quite sure how much this impacks the mileage.

So am I just a profligate spenthrift scofflaw if I were to admit that Mr. Moneybags 1% here has never once properly calculated his gas mileage after 9,000 miles? :opps:

I think I get about 30 mpg. I know I get better mileage than I did when I first got it. I know that I burn through gas tanks faster when I fall in love with my throttle (speed on the slab don't come cheap).

Other than that? Eh, whatever. On my big trip to Chicago I had it in my head that I'd keep track of my gas expenses, I'd save every receipt, etc., etc. Gave up that fantasy about 500 miles in. I discovered that I just don't care about it enough-- my mileage is good enough to keep me smiling for long enough.

That all said... loyal 87 user here (I won't get into the octane debate here, you all know how I feel :sour:).

But I *will* vouch for the miracle healing powers of non-ethanol gas. You can't find that stuff at all around Washington, unfortunately, so it's a real treat when I find it (hurray for jaunts to West Virginia!).
