Gas Gauge

Has anyone have gas gauge problems. I experience my first one this past weekend. I was running low and almost ran out of gas. When I finally got to a gas station was able to fill up Spyder took 5.8 gallons. But now the gauge will not register the correct amount of gas I have in tank. I would register half tank all the way home so when I arrive I filled up again and it only took 1.5 gallons. But as I said the gauge is going loopy on me. I wonder if the sender on the gas tank went bad.

Love the Spyder had all recalls done no complaints here and if the gauge is the only problem I'm happy. But would like to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Thanks:spyder2:

similar . . .

. . . mine was unreliable - the other way. When I was at one bar and the light was on, it would only take between 2 and 3.5 gallons. But, it would never darken the two top bars.

My dealership told me that motorcycle gas gauges are not accurate, that I would get use to it. ( I have been riding motorcycles since 1965 )

Around 2,600 miles it started working perfectly and has been fine ever since. Ask your dealer, hopefully they are more helpful.

Tom

If they aren't helpful, then hit as many pot holes as you can and see if things get shaken loose.:roflblack: Works well on my BRP jet skiies. I just kept on jumping huge waves until the guage starts to work again.

I just had nime in for that and they "lubed the cable", what ever that means as I thought it was electric and how you lube it in the gas tank? It took a couple times durring the day as it was still sticking for the mechanic but so far so good.

I have the same problem as Tom. I'll be down to one dot, and the gas warning indicator light will come on when I'm at about 140 miles on the tank. Then it will only take about 3.5 gallons to fill it.
But I'm used to having to watch the miles on the trip odometer on a bike, anyway, so I'm just going to use Trip A for my gas gauge. I'm getting about 38 miles a gallon, so 200 miles shouldn't be a problem.
Is that about what everyone else can get between fillups?
Driving 50-60 miles with the gas light on is going to make a little nervous at first, though, until I see it'll do it. Might carry a can of gas with me the first time!

. . . . I was always forgetting to reset the trip odometers.

You are getting excellent mileage, in my book. Since the update, I am getting around 36-37 mpg and it keeps improving - that is a 10mpg over some of the lows I recorded.

I get between 140 and 150 between fill-ups now. Before, when the gauge wasn't "accurate" it was 80 to 90 miles.

38mpg? What are you riding?

A couple months ago, my gauge started acting up... would drop from full to empty within 50 miles. Fill it up and only take 1 1/2 gal. I took it into a dealer and he pulled the instrument cluster to make sure all the contacts were clean and seated. Didn't seem to make a difference, but after a few days, it started working normally again and has been fine since.

I cleared trip odometer A at last fillup. Drove 147.7 miles then filled up again and it took 3.82 gallons. You can do the math.
That was 80% highway, and when my husband rides with me, he tells me I'm slow at accelerating and moving through the gears up to speed, so maybe I do "go easy" on it.

I have the Hindle Silencer exhaust---- does that affect mpg?

At about 3600 miles my gas gauge went flooey. Jumped all over the place from empty to full etc. Took it in to the dealer and it was found to be bad. Replacement of the entire instrument cluster was required, but it fixed the problem. The only PIA was that I will always have a speedo that reads 3600 miles less than actual.

Sounds like a mechanic blowing smoke, ask him about the whiffle valve.

I believe you then, Karen. Unfortunately I had been ill advised by two evil forum members Firefly and BajaRon to keep my Spyder over 4500 RPM. Only getting 28-29 MPG.

I saw their advice . . . . .

. . . . but they did not say to keep it at the Redline, no matter what gear, including R.

They also did not advise you to sit at the Galveston beach in Neutral and rev your engine for the passerbys for hours at a time.

. . . . and just when did you start taking advice?

Tom :D
