Gas Dripping

Just got back from a decent ride, first of the year. And I always check underneath after parking it in the barn for leaks. Well there was one, pure gas. Was dripping from evap hose, also could see a thick vapor pouring from the hose. Didn't last long, I searched and didn't find definate answers so why would it do that, is it normal..should I not ride it til something is done?

Didn't have any gas smells while riding if that helps.
Also, when I filled it up a few days ago, I did fill pretty high.

It's probably coming the evap canister, There was a update where the hose was redirected. And i think they changed the timing of the canister valve also. I never had it done as i haven't any gas smell or dripping, And i fill my tank to the absolute top ,Lucky i guess? But if you look at last summers post about this it was very common

I would take your :spyder2: in to make sure the hose is redirected and all updates are done.

I would hate for yours to be the first fire of the season reported.nojoke

Mine was updated, so it could be spillage from packing the tank soo full?? I should've know better. Called dealer to just double check, all updates have been done.

Overfilling is most likely the culprit. My evap hose is right where it's supposed to be and if I overfill it'll drip after shutdown. I've heard that that ruins the canister but don't know for sure.

Thanks guys for the input. Now let me ask you, what is the sole purpose of the canister?? Does it matter that I am not required to emission test here? Just sayin, if its about emissions I won't worry if it messed it up or not.

Overfill of the tank is most likely as stated above. The cannister contains carbon, and that is supposed to eliminate the smell of gas fumes. However, once you overflow the tank enough to flood the cannister, the carbon is basically exhausted and no longer does its job. As long as your hose is coming out underneath the Spyder, near the front center of the frame, everything should be okay. I know I killed my carbon a long, long, time ago.

It is emissions equipment. With no testing in your area, whether or not it matters is up to you and your conscience. Having a plastic container, filled with gas, that close to a bunch of hot stuff worries me a bit, though. If you overfill it once, it will ruin the activated carbon, but the gas will eventually evaporate. (Condensation of the evaporated fumes in the vent hose causes the dripping.) If you overfill frequently, gas will always remain in the canister, and that may make you nervous, too. Even then, there is far more danger if the canister becomes cracked and leaks, or if the vent remains under the bodywork, than anything else.

Not saying this is what's going on with your Spyder but the times I had raw gas spilling out after shutting the Spyder off, it was determined I had a faulty gas tank. Something about a weld or rivet on a seal on top of the tank had broken and I guess when pressure got to be too much in the tank it pushed fuel out from the broken seal.

Not really 100% sure if it is a rivet that broke or not (I am not at all mechanically inclined) but if you ask The Pitbull Buggy (Len) he can tell you for sure what it was that broke.

Correct Joe when your bike was leaking fuel last year the spot welds around the fuel pump insert area had broken lose. So yes you are correct in what you are saying. I do think everyone is right on the over filling. You also have to request the hose to be added to your canister..... It was not a recal but more of a requested update...... So double check with your dealer, it is not an automatic dealer updated. Better off to not to fill to the top give the tank some breathing room.

Great information guys. Like I said, I was aware that I overfilled, don't know why I did it. Won't do it again. Until now, when the pump clicked off that was it. I will go back to that. Definately don't want gas collecting in the canister all the time. It would absolutely make for a nervous ryder.

Was your leaking from the canister hose??

No, as Len confirmed mine was leaking from the fuel pump insert area. As he said, a spot weld had broken loose. I thought it was a rivet.

The last time I had a leak from the evap cannister (best they could determine anyway), something terrible happened. My Spyder caught on fire.
