• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Fuel Filter - Replace at 5 years or 30,000km (19,000 miles)

Hey everyone!
I will be coming up on my 30,000km (19,000mile) service soon. One of the items on my maintenance list is: "FUEL FILTER - REPLACE EVERY 5 YEARS OR 30,000KM (19,000MILES)". The Fuel Filter is: 219800056 ( which seems to include the stock clamps - 2 Oetiker Clamps ).


Since there seems to have been problems with the Oetiker Clamps coming loose at the filter and causing dangerous fuel leaks in that area, I will be moving to worm clamps to help avoid those dangers.


I know that positioning of the filter / direction of fuel flow is critical, as per the service manual. Has anyone here replaced their fuel filter before, any tips to share?

Dean, you are probably wise to use the worm clamps if you do not have the correct Oetiker clamp pliers to crimp the new clamps. Check with your dealer first, to make sure they don't see any warranty issue with using the worm clamps. Some dealers have denied claims as a result of changing the clamps. (Dumb!) Also, be sure to check the clamps on any fuel line again after a few hundred km, to make sure they are still correctly tightened.

Yup-- and you can buy them at many local auto parts stores--- pretty sure I got mine at pep boys.

Mine has had 1 Oetiker and 1 worm from day one--- don't know why.

I replaced the fuel filter at about 30,000 miles on my first Spyder. Then I cut the old one open to see how much dirt was in there. It was perfectly clean. I have yet to replace the fuel filter on my second Spyder - just about 87,000 miles. I am thinking I might do it at 100,000 miles.

I would stick with Oetiker clamps, Properly installed Oetiker's shouldn't loosen, While Worm's have to be inspected often because they tend to loosen over time.
A while back someone had posted that a worm clamp loosened up and sprayed gas over their engine.
The only time i recalled someone having a problem with an Oetiker is when it wasn't properly installed on the filter.

I've talked with the Dealer about the fuel filter and clamps. They echoed that the Oetiker vs worm clamps are different in a few ways. I will be sticking with the BRP stock type Oetiker clamps. The clamps do come with the fuel filter, part number:219800056 (filter and two oetiker clamps).

I hope to get in the shop soon and will request they replace the clamps and filter, then.

Be sure and use some Oetiker clamp pliers to cinch them down. Using the right tool is especially important on fuel lines. If you can't purchase (or rent?) the correct tool, have the dealer do the installation.

Appreciate the note, Scotty, thanks! I will have the dealer install the Oetiker clamps with Oetiker clamp pliers. Since there has been a few issues in that area (fuel filter - clamps), I think it best to have a Dealer performance that maintenance.

Does anybody know if these fuel filters are BRP specific or would a yamaha or Suzuki work for the spyder??

I guess if you look hard enough you can find a non BRP filter that will work but why?? The fuel filter is change so infrequently just get it from the dealer then there's no guess work.
 
Mine had a blow out at the seam cold garage and possible water in the gas my dealer is a ways away jus for a $15 part figure if there universal I can jus pick one up frm a local bike shop, ima see if they can just mail it to me

The filter from BRP comes with two Oetiker clamps to attach it. I do not recommend regular worm-type hose clamps in this high pressure application. You can get special clamps for fuel injection systems at the auto parts store...where you could also probably match up the filter. If you buy the BRP filter, you will have to have them install it, or buy some of the special Oetiker clamp pliers to properly clamp it.
 
Fuel filter search

A few days ago I contacted a major fuel filter supplier concerning the Spyder fuel filter. This supplier did a search of many of the manufacturers and this is their reply...

I tried all the sites that I know for a cross reference for the BRP Part number with no luck.

Wix, Fram, Purolator, Champion Labs, Hastings, Lubrifiner, and Baldwin.
