Front Tire Hop at 58 mph

Questions

New member
I notice a tire hop on a slightly rough road at around 57-60 mph. Though possibly a tire balance issue, but it doesn't do it on a smooth road. It is like a front end chatter from the tire on one side and then the other. Both tires get into a rhythm hopping. Anyone else have that issue. 2014 RTS with 6,000 miles.

Interesting..!!

what is the condition of the tires..?? Cupping..?? Your right with the hopping being possibly balance but that would be one wheel all the time. Alternating wheels is odd. That road may be the problem if it is rhe only place it happens...strange but may need a front end check up...:dontknow:

Had the same thing on my 2013 RT, had the tires balanced 3 times, didnt help. turned out to be a out of round tire. Dealer replaced tire no more problem !

If you try the balance & out of round things and can't/don't get it sorted, it's probably worth your while to look at getting a wheel alignment!!

That sort of 'hopping' type vibration that starts with one wheel then progresses to the other on a slightly rough road or after hitting a smallish bump is something we fairly often see on 4WD vehicles that have caster problems or other wheel alignment issues, so it could well be something similar on your Spyder - cos we all know how wonderful the factory Wheel alignment is on some Spyders! :yikes:

I had this issue with my new 2014 RTS and after spending a couple weeks at the dealer they ended up replacing the defective tires and rims. Although it was thought that the 3 sets of defective front tires was actually the problem until they got a good set of them.

I would find a garage that has a hunter road force balancing machine that can check the tires out.

Sounds pretty typical of the cheap Kenda OEM tires. We see this quite often, tire doesn't balance well, put on new tire and works like a charm. Back when I had both of my 2008s I had two extra sets of six spoke wheels for a total of four sets of wheels. One of my Spyders was way smoother than the other, started to swap wheels around to see what was what. We quickly identified the "bad" wheel and tire combo. It was amazing what we learned after trying to balance each wheel and tire, and then trying many different combinations on each Spyder. Bottom line, some of the tires are not as well built as others and are difficult to get to run smooth. This is why some of us complain about the OE Kenda tires as much as we do. Some work fine, but some are just plain not good enough. You can try to balance it, but replacing it will likely be the right solution. Assuming proper alignment, preload, pressure, etc.
