Front End Vibration?

Has anyone experienced front end vibration at a certain speed (45-48 mph) and switched to Elka shocks and the problem was solved?

My Spyder would vibrate at 45 to 50 mph. I already have the Elka shocks so that wasn't the problem. What fixed it was replacing the out of round front tires. I now have over 5K miles on them and no vibrations. Also, if your vibration happens at a certain RPM range then it could be the belt too loose. I put on Jim's SmoothSpyder belt tensioner last year and no longer get vibrations from the belt.

I know that Elkas can cure pretty much everything; but I'm not sure how they'd affect a bike that was experiencing vibrations up front..
Wheel alignment or tire imbalance might get things "buzzy". but a shock would impact neither. (Or I should say that "I don't Know" how it could impact those conditions.)
My front end was completely loose; other than being "skittish", there was no vibration cauded by that situation... And it surprised me that there wasn't!

I should have said "wobble" instead of vibration. It is a noticeable wobble that causes the rear of the front fenders to shake back and forth. I have had the tires off twice and checked by two different tire shops. The balance, rims and tires checked our perfect both times. Ride On made no difference.

Mine would do the same thing. At 45 to 50 I could touch my shoe to the back of the front fenders and feel a definite shake. The left was worse than the right side but both did it. I took my front tires to a local tire shop. They removed the Ride-On and balanced. Said they were good to go. Still had what I call "the shakes" at 45 to 50 mph. The front console would also shake side to side. Took the tires back and they rebalaced. Still the same result. Took my Spyder to Cowtown and they put on new front tires. From then on it was perfectly smooth with no shakes.

How any miles did you have on the old ones before you made the change?

I don't rememer exactly but I believe it was less than 4K miles. I screamed warranty but BRP wasn't listening. I figured I would at least get some kind of a prorated discount. However, Len at Cowtown quoted me a really great price on a new set of OEM tires. From then on I go to Cowtown for any service or accessories. They are definitely :firstplace: in my book.

I had this exact problem, except I noticed it happen AFTER I had the Elkas put on at Spyderfest. I had just over 7k on them. They rotated them for me the next day (after a VERY long wait for this and a few other things, a whole different story), which requires them to be removed from the rims so the tread pattern is in the right direction, and rebalance and it went away. They said this should be done every 6K miles. Guess I need to read the manual!!

Yeah Hawk you spent a lot of time in the shop, glad things are running good.
Dont forget that performance package.

Thanks Rick, today after only 5,500 miles I bit the bullet and purchased a new set of front OEM tires. THE DIFFERENCE IS NIGHT AND DAY! I FINALLY have a smooth RT. Its like a totally different Spyder.:yes::yes:

wheel weights

Take a look at the attached photo. It is obvious that the old tire had issues because you can plainly see where the old wheels weights were attached and the new weights with the new tire. What a difference in the amount of weights used before and after!

TIRE ISSUE

Rando you had a seriously out of wack imbalenced tire to require that much corrective weight.....I think that tire never should have been left on you're spyder to begin with ( by the dealer )....Any tire that requires that much weight to correct is defective...IMHO...Mike...

Thanks, I agree. You mentioned that the dealer should have caught it. Aren't the Spyders shipped from the factory with the wheels all ready balanced and the dealer just installs them or are the wheels also installed?
