Front Bearing and Hub

Hi Guys,
A couple weeks ago I had the misfortune to almost be run off the road by a car. During this the right wheel dropped into a hole in the road between an exit ramp and Route 95. It was not a pot hole. It looked like someone had started using a backhoe to dig up the asphalt. The right front wheel dropped into the hole with a horrendous bang and I really thought the bike was going to flip. The wheel popped back out though and the tire was not flat.

Not having many options to check for damage because it was dark out I headed home. Everything seemed fine for a couple weeks until I noticed there was no tread left on the inside of the right tire and it was much more worn than the left one (both tires had even wear before the incident). So I took it to the dealer.

They have told me that the right wheel does not spin freely and they need to replace the bearings and hub. They also need to change the brake pads as well because they are more worn on the right wheel. I obviously need new front tires as well. They also said I should have the brake system maintenance done since I have over 12,000 miles on it.

They say this will all cost about $1,000.

$500 in parts and $500 in labor.

Someone please tell me that the estimate sounds right. This is the dealer that did all the warranty work when the clutch basket came loose and trashed the transmission. They seem like straight up guys but $1000 for bearings, tires and brake service seems like a lot.

Let me know what you think.

Wow

No way!
Cost of parts is totally wrong my Mate, check it yourself .
Cost of labor might be real since bleeding of breaks is time consuming job alone.
Remember that there is always asking price and price, good luck.
Keep us posted.

How do I check the parts cost? I know the tires are now $80 a shot but I do agree that it should not be that much for the bearings and hubs.

Right at the homepage here , click on Vendor's banner - direct parts or something, Lamont and Bajaron would be MiB for this.

Two Tires, brake pads L/R, Hub ,bearings Plus assorted parts, I don't think 500 is too far off the mark.
I'm surprised you don't need a brake disk also.:dontknow:

PARTS

HI CHRIS . I BUY PARTS FROM WWW.PARTSHARK.COM. THIS IS A PLACE TO FIND COST. I ALSO BUY FRONT TIRES ON EBAY2 FOR 135 FREE SHIPPING. I HAVE THEM MOUNDED AND BALANCED AT MEINEKE COST ABOUT 45 FOR BOTH AND I HAVE CHROME WHEELS. SORRY TO HEAR. HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS. HOPE TO SEEYOU 'WWR':thumbup::thumbup:

What is really weird about this is the fact that they did not metion anything about your alignment. :dontknow:

I agree with Artufun. Why did all of this damage happen in the first place. As you said all was well for awhile. You may have something bent as well, beyond just an alignment. If you don't get to the cause you will be doing all of this work all over again in a few months.

I wouldn't think they couldn't do anything with the alignment until the previous work stated was done, but an alignment will be necessary for sure or you will be replacing your front tires very frequently. As far as the price goes I would ask if they could do any better, but having said that the price seems reasonable. I think to bleed the brakes they hook it up to B.U.D.s and it takes 5-6 hours.

I'm not getting this either, why would they need to bleed the brakes ??? Is this part of the maintainence ???

Bleeding the brakes is done when they drain [change] the brake fluid, Its a maintenance thing, Recommended every 12000 miles or two years, If i remember the schedule.

OK, now I get it. :thumbup:That seems excessive, Hollys 2003 Jeep has 140,000 miles on it and has never been changed

I know i had 335,000 miles on a VW GTI [driving into manhattan 6 days a week] and never changed it also.
But all manufacturers highly recommended it because of water absorption to change it every two years.:dontknow:

Thanks for the replies all. I do need the front end work but I think I will hold off on the brake bleed for now. It will knock a couple hundred off of the job.

For interest's sake can someone explain the procedure for bleeding our spyder brakes and why the need for BUDS. Many of us have bled brakes and clutches before and it was pretty simple given the right tools. How is the Spyder so different....?

You should also check that front rim for damage possibly out of round. They are always available on ebay, fairly cheap for the rs. I also would think you should have the alignment checked. Another option is to take it to a local mc shop, buy the parts yourself since none of the work you need would require hooking up to buds. BTW their used to be a link on this forum for a free upload for a shop manual.
