FRED RAU SPYDER CONTRADICTION?

Not everyone is using my first comment about it not being a motorcycle-
I made it cuz I always wanted to use that flogged horse !
:bdh::bdh: :roflblack:
I think Scotty's take on the issue was the best.

But I do want to congratulate you- Fred is probably getting a chuckle on this thread and knows what extra chapter is going into his second edtion!nojoke

SO it's the flogged Horse you like, eh?

So... What kind of oil is everybody using these days! :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack:
:bdh: I'm sorry, I could NOT help myself! Fordguy, I hear what yer sayin, Brother. It will be interesting indeed to read what Mr. Rau writes in regard to this if in fact he decides to respond. I have never had the pleasure of meeting him but from what I can gather he is pretty enthusiastic about the Spyder, so I would not feel too betrayed. I think Scott made a nice analysis in his post.

nancy's toy i think your confused. i agree, the bmw owners weren't disappointed with much of what fred wrote about the goldwings because HE WROTE ABOUT THEM BOTH! fred never mentions a spyder at all. zero. the book does NOT confirm that the spyder has comfort and storage capacity because its NOT in there. everyone keeps using this excuse that a spyder is not a motorcycle so a book about motorcycle touring shouldn't include anything about a spyder. let me ask you this......if a spyder is not a motorcycle......and not intended for a motorcycle audience.....then why the heck get a world renowned MOTORCYCLE EXPERT....to drive one around for 50,000 miles??? and show it off???? why not get a zoo keeper,,,,or a nascar driver......come on. spyder's opened up the segment for many who could not normally enjoy a motorcycle.. but they are a motorcycle!!:gaah:
Very sorry you are so disappointed. Perhaps you can get you money back...on either the book or the Spyder. This isn't that big a deal!

agreed scotty! sorry for getting so frustrated. i may indeed return the book but the spyder???? never. re-read your post and i have to agree with everyone else. you said it best! thanks for the info!

My Opinions - Contradictions

Geez - I get on the road and out of touch for a couple of days, and all hell breaks loose.
You know, "fordguyupnorth," you COULD have just emailed or called and ASKED me about all this before creating this little firestorm. It's weird watching everyone postulate on what they "think" I meant or said. But now that the damage is done, I'll try to answer all the questions. First of all, though, if you're looking for apologies or retractions - forget it. I still believe in and stand behind everything I wrote.
So for starters, the book manuscript was submitted to the publisher about eight months before the first time I ever threw a leg over a Spyder. That right there should explain a lot. And I have no control over the printing and distribution schedule. When the economy hit the fan, Motorbooks International put all new releases on hold for a year, so the book was nearly 18 months late coming out. Please don't give me any more flack about not including the Spyder - I hadn't ever ridden one when I wrote that book.
It was noted that I said that I figured the minimum fuel range of a touring bike should be 175 miles. That puts the Spyder right on the fence as barely acceptable. But for the record, I like so much else about it, this would not be enough to keep me from riding it all over the country, which I have done and am doing again right now.
As far as not buying the first generation - I still believe in that. My early production RT has had a half-dozen "teething problems," but as I noted elsewhere, of the 300-plus vehicles I have tested in my career, the Spyder ranks in the top two or three for having the least amount of problems. That's really saying something, but not much solace to those who plunked down $30,000 and then had to have their DPS replaced, or a clutch upgraded, etc. If I had bought this Spyder, I still would have loved it, but I wouldn't have been too happy with the early problems. And yes - I am getting a new 2011 RT in about two weeks - and I'm excited about it.
By the way, I don't consider my book the "bible," or myself a "god." I HATE the title of the book, but like most of our politicians, I didn't read the fine print on my contract, and the publisher got the final say on the title. I wanted to call it "The First Million Miles."
Oh, and another thing, I have already proposed writing a book strictly about the Spyders. The publisher and I are in negotiations about it.
Did I leave anything out? Feel free to ask, but do me a favor and don't make assumptions on my behalf. I'm perfectly willing to answer any questions, as honestly as possible.
Final note for now -- before riding the Spyder, I had tried at least six other three-wheelers and hated them. I never expected to like the Spyder. In fact, my intention was to ride one for a while and then tell all my readers why they shouldn't buy one. I'm man enough to admit I had preconceived prejudices, but also that the Spyder surprised and amazed me. I am a total convert, and hope never again to be without a Spyder in my garage!
Fred

wow, thanks for responding! thats cool. first off i am not the one that implied you were god or that you wrote the bible. second, even if i emailed you directly i still would have posted my tastes for your book because thats what we do here is try to share our opinions so everyone can make there own decision. third, i think its awsome that your considering a book about the spyder! we will all love that. fourth, sounds like you will be ryding the same spyder i do, color and all! fifth, i dont think any damage has been done at all. if anything i think more people will read your book and chances are be less disapointed if they were expecting to see anything about the spyder. sixth, i like your idea of the book title better than what it ended up being! thanks again for corresponding and ride safe!!

A good reply from Fred. I think he answered all of the issues. I'm looking forward to receiving my copy of the book and will enjoy it with all the background information in mind.

Glad to see Fred replied so quickly. I was just getting ready to state that I thought maybe the manuscript had been written and submitted long before it was actually published. Publishing is a long process and that does not surprise me. Thank you Fred for being such a great Spyder Ambassador.

Did you one better (or worse, depending on how you look at it). I replied to Lamont's post (without reading any further) with exactly what you said Debbie.

Then when I went further, found that though I was right, the issue had already been cleared up by Fred himself.

Still fun to postulate.... But the rules are it has to be done BEFORE the facts are published!

...I love this site....

And lamonster's right- Your always late baja! Look 5 posts up!:joke:

I like Fred's title better as well, but don't think I could wait for the sequel, "The second million miles"

LOL you changed your post Baja while I was writing mine!

Fordguy, you can't go by anything you read these days anyhow. For example

1. In my history book in school it stated Christopher Columbus discovered America. But weren't the Indians already here ???

2. That Nostradamus Fella wrote the world will end.

3. I also read in the National Enquirer magazine, and they stated that Oprah Winfrey was abducted by aliens but I just seen her on her OWN tv network.

4. And don't forget about Y2K back in 2000. Nothing happened !!!

:roflblack: I'm only joking people, I'm just trying to lighten this thread up.:roflblack:

Some people just like to sling mud others are fact finders. In this case this thread would never had gotten so muddy if the facts were checked first.

Fred I am enjoying your book and had no expectations that it would address one specific motorcycle. If I want to read about just one motorcycle I'll pickup a brochure.

well said sea breeze! glad good people like you and i are in the "fact finders" catagory. i will keep an eye out for those "mud slingers" and let ya know when i find one! good lookin out! i didnt have any expectations of freds book being about one specific motorcycle either. i knew it would compare the worlds top touring bikes! so after i read his opinions on those i could make up my own mind as to which brochures to pick up!

Why is it that no one ever quotes the 2nd half of my Avatar? :dontknow:

Ron, I don't want people to start talking, but I believe the second half of your avatar is true. :D Good friends are always worth waiting for and bjt and I consider you a good friend. nojoke
