For Those Who Have Owned & Ridden Both........

.........a GL1800 trike & any '14 Spyder RT series, is one really "better" than the other on a long trip, or is it a toss-up? I'm on the fence.
Thanks in advance for your insight

We are a bit biased here. Give Big Red 1 a holler. He owns both.

Oh, The Spyder is best. :roflblack::roflblack:

Yup! He's an ideal source for info...

...as is SteveMac. He's currenty on an 1800 Trike, after riding a Spyder extensively! :2thumbs:

Both have/had the 998 motor in their Spyders. It's entirely possible that the 1330 triple vs. 1800 six does not exist.

They've only been out for a year... :dontknow:
If you've ridden the 1330; you know the differences in the engine, transmission, cooling and electrical systems are "Da-Bomb!"
The chassis differences with the 'Wing and the RT, is where your focus might be best-served... :D

A tricycle with one wheel in front is inherently unstable. The Spyder is inherently stable. What more reason could you want???

The GL1800 is a top notch bike, but to make it a trike, you have to use aftermarket products. Honda has never made one. Hardley started by having another company build their trikes, and I'll wager took over the manufacturing because of liability issues.

All I can say about the real world comparison is take the MSF Trike & Hack class, and you will be able to answer this question for yourself. I did, and I ride a Spyder, and would never consider one of the other options.

Well, it would probably be different to different people.

I've never owned a GoldWing trike but I've ridden many of them. To me they simply are not comfortable. At all. I find the Spyder RT MUCH more comfortable, which is one of the reasons I bought it.

But that's just me. Other people have other opinions.

I have done both a two wheeled Goldwing and a 13 998 Spyder and now a 14 1330 Spyder. I can tell you that BRP has got really close to a awesome touring bike with the RT 1330 Spyder. The only two areas that are still lacking are,.. the audio system (still sucks) and the seat comfort! Even with the "comfort" seat the spyder still lacks in that area. The 1330 motor pulls really hard and has a huge torque band down low which makes for great cruising.

1) SteveMac is out of commission for a while. Can't go into details, but he is trying to recover fast so that he can come back to the riding world. I will say on his behalf that although he loves his triked Wing, he misses the Spyder's stability and ease of turn. He jumped over to a Wing for reliability and accessibility of maintenance vs having to ride for hours to get the Spyder serviced.

If you did wager, you would have lost.:roflblack: :joke:
Harley entered into an agreement in 2008 with Lehman Trikes to provide parts and "conversion services", and final assembly of the Tri Glides was initially completed at Lehman's facility. When John Lehman died in 2012, HD bought the company and the Tri Glides are now assembled at the Harley Davidson plant in York, Pennsylvania.

Thanks for your honest evaluation of the current 1330 Spyder. It pretty much matches mine. No integrated audio/com system like on the Wings and Ultras. Seat is shorter overall than the GW and H-D. I will not be able to have a backrest to allow my wife more room. The other concern is the real useful storage capacity because of the weird shapes of the funk and trunk. BRP says 41gal/155L. That converts to 5.5 cu.ft., which is low in comparison to what is available today.
I am waiting for what's coming in 2015. Hoping for tweaks/upgrades to some of the passenger comfort subsystems on the RTs.

Am I the ONLY one who bought a Spyder because it's safer? :banghead:
If you take a single front wheel trike too fast into a curve, you'll flip it! Didn't you ever ride a tricycle???
If you take a Spyder too fast into a turn it will decelerate and apply selective braking to keep you upright and under control. THAT is reason enough to take a Spyder over ANY trike!

(Maybe I'm assuming too much. I keep thinking most people on here have owned ridden, wrenched, and built dozens of motorcycles for nearly sixty years, and have ridden hack rigs and trikes and finally settled on the safest alternative in their declining biking years, like me!)

I'm not sure that is the "True Story". H-D started making the Tri-Glides themselves in York, PA before John died. I don't think "H-D bought the company". As you can imagine, the resultant loss of cash flow resulted in financial hardship for the Lehman Co. When John passed, that was the preverbal "last straw". Subsequently, The Lehman company shuttered it's doors. Enter into the picture, six months or so later, the Champion company. They financially resuscitated Lehman, and brought back the old workers. There was all sorts of talk about Lehman being independant. Soon after, the Monarch II LLS arrived on the scene. It's the marrage of the Champion IRS drivetrain with a redesigned Lehman Monarch II body. Doesn't look like an independant company to me

Those remarks withstanding, I've been looking at converting from a conventional trike to a Spyder SE6 as a result of the loss of some function of my left hand post reconstructive surgery. We enjoyed our hour long test ride; but one hour is not 5-6 hours on a trip. However there are some technical obstacles to overcome:
1. 5.5 cu.ft. of total storage in weidly shaped spaces is a problem. Not enough room to pack for a long weekend getaway.Wife says NO Trailers.
2. Lack of an integrated audio/comm system. At $25-30K, this should be standard fare

 I didn't know that he was out of commission...
Please give him our best wishes for a rapid and complete recovery!
