Fly and Ride part 2, long

Well I flew out of Indy Sat am on my way to Atlanta to meet Scott Davis and buy his 08 Spyder. On the plane I was seated next to a young man in the Army on his way back to Afganistan. He had been home on R&R and his wife had a baby while he was home. He was really in the dumps for having to leave. Did't know what to say to help make it easier. Just told him I was proud to be able to sit next to him and thanked him for all his sacrifice so that I could play. I know it did not make it any better and I upset that I did not have the right words to help.

Scott met me at the airport and we made the trip to get the Spyder in Lagrange, about 60 miles south.
The bike was as Scott had said, very nice, and we exchanged paperwork and away I go. I decided to ride Highway 27 north and stay off the interstate. First 100 miles was getting used to everything which was really easy. Stopped for fuel in Rome Ga and after fueling pulled to the side to call my wife. While standing there the bike drew a crowd. I talked for a bit and one guy wanted to hear it run. I went to start it and nothing! of course with the crowd I was nervous. Finally called Scott and after going through everything he suggested I try the spare key. It started and I waved to the crowd and left. It did this one other time on the way back but this time I took the key out and walked out about 10 feet, came back and put the key in and it started up. I guess is is a quirt in the security.

After leaving Rome and heading north I got my first scare. I was getting cocky and picked up the pace to about 70mph and was taking a curve to the right when I started drifting over the center lane and a car was coming at me. I was able to pull it hard right at the last second. Scared the hell out of me and him. Decided I was not as good on the Spyder as I thought.

Stopped the night in Manchester Tn. Got an early start the next am and took Tn53 out of Manchester riding north. Highway 53 between Woodbury and Liberty Tn was one very fun road. I was running about daybreak so there was no traffic and I could give the Spyder a workout.

Hit Interstate 65 north at Bowling Green Ky. Rode interstate the rest of the way. Another new experience and the Spyder did great. Only problem was staying below 80. Rode most of the way between 80and 85.

Put my Ipod in this day and it made for a better ride. Less road noise.

My only issues are the vibration in the handlebars and still getting used to leaning into the turn. Fuel mileage was about 29 or 30 mpg. Bike has not had either update done. Took it to the carwash to spray off the bugs and it did not want to start. Also had an error code show up. I guess I can not power wash it but now I wonder about riding in the rain. Once it dryed a little it was fine.

Since we also have a Goldwing trike it is hard not to compare but it's not fair because they are two different animals. Comfort and ease of ride the Goldwing wins hands down. Personally handling is close riding at 8/10ths. 10/10ths The Spyder is best. The Syder is more sportbike.

All in all a great ride home

Congrats on your purchase!

:congrats: Bill, I would not recommend using a power washer on the Spyder or any motorcycle, for that matter. The flow is so strong, it is too easy to force water where it shouldn't be and blow out grease from fittings. I have never used anything stronger than a garden hose on any of my motorcycles or my Spyder.

Good luck with the Spyder. Ryde on!

Congrats on making the long ride back home.

Sounds like you need to stop by the dealer and have them check it out.

:agree: Did the previous owner have these problems?

I have washed my Spyder at the car wash before but I always use the low pressure wash and rinse and keep the nozzle plenty far from the bike. I mostly like going there to use the foaming brush.

I am the previous owner, and no, I never had any of the problems mentioned. I did not ride it much, and only took one long trip.
I got about the same mileage, maybe 32 - 33 as I never really did more than 75 on it. Most of my riding was lazy back roads on sunny days.

I ALWAYS hand washed with a spray on water / cleaner mix, never touched with a hose or any thing like that. It WAS babied.

Lastly, I never rode with both keys, as the security was the code in the key head. I left the "spare" key at home.. always.

I did not have the "patch" done as I heard too many complaints and issues after the application. I did have the brakes replaced and the gear position sensor replaced. I also had them put on new exhaust gaskets when they replaced the GPS as they told me it LOOKED as if they were going bad. The dealership I purchased from is fantastic!

All oil and filters were done at the dealership. All in all it is a great machine.

Welcome home, Bill.;) Glad you made it, despite all of the "cages" along the way. I echo the previous owner's, and other comments: NEVER powerwash a Spyder. I handwash mine with a micro-fiber cloth. Of course, my loving spouse doesn't quite understand the cooing noises I make, while I'm doing this...ah, well.:f_spider:

As Scott said the bike is great. The problems I have had I think are mostly self induced. When I use a power washer I try not to get any vitals but after my trip the bugs were about an inch thick. I have not had a chance to ride it much this week because of rain and getting our other bikes ready to ride to Biketoberfest. I am riding my Vision and my wife is riding the Goldwing trike. When we get back I will get some more miles on it. My wife loves to ride it also so I may have a battle getting seat time on it.

This gives me pause

Indybill, glad you made it home in one piece.
I wash my at the car wash all the time and have never, ever, had any problems. I've got almost 13 grand on mine now. Maybe, I've just gotten lucky? I'm not sure.
One the other hand, let's see.... This machine never gives SCDTRD any problems what so ever. He sells it to you.
You climb on the thing for the ride home and experience a few problems before you even get home. :dontknow:
I'm sorry but this gives me pause.....
I hope you get everything taken care of Indy. Keep it on 3-wheels and ride safe.

:congrats:

You'll get used to the ride and it will become second nature. On the keys I seem to recall some having a problem with the antenna in the security system on the bike (DES I think they call it) - I think they were replacing them and that took care of it.

I go to the car wash and do my Spyder--- never had a problem--- but I'm carefull not to hit it with high pressure when close to the bike.

Enjoy !
