Firstgear Mesh-Tex Jacket

ARtraveler

R.I.P. Dwayne
Due to the nice summer we are having here in AK, it was time for me to purchase a mesh jacket for Akspyderlady.

I opted for a Firstgear Mesh Tex. Just wanted to say that I am very pleased with the jacket. Quality fit, and build. It comes with shoulder, elbow, and back pads--but I prefer to remove those items for a lighter weight and more comfortable feel to the jacket.

I highly recommend this product if you are in the market for mesh.

I have been using a Gerike Mesh jacket for myself the last four years or so--but have to say, I like the Firstgear better.

Firstgear makes good stuff. That's what I wear.

I've got the Mesh-Tex (Men's and Women's), the Rush-Tex (Men's and Women's) and the ladies only Contour jackets and mesh pants for great prices (as always).

I've seen you mention this before and I decided at that time to do the pad removal on my Draggin' Jeans because they were a pain to get on with the pads and bulky. I have an FS mesh jacket, which really isn't as cool (temperature wise) as I'd like. Do you think removing those pads may help in the temperature department? Also, when you rode 2 wheels did you also remove the pads? Or, do you remove them now because the Spyder offers more safety?

I may have to just break down and buy the Bohn Armour Airtex shirt.

The older Firstgear Mesh gear had a tighter mesh weave and was not as 'cool' as their current gear. But you're never going to be cool on a hot day, regardless. You're just cooler than you would be wearing anything else that will protect you in an accident when you're wearing Mesh gear.

I've got a First Gear mesh jacket that I got from Ron last year. It's a fantastic jacket and you can't beat the prices.
My only complaint is that I really need to think about picking up another one a size smaller since I've lost about 30lbs since last year.:sour:

:ani29:: Removing the pads does help in the temperature department for sure.

:ani29:: Safety wise--Leaving the pads in is a wiser idea. ATGATT, you know.

I have made the conscious decision to remove the bulky pads from all my Textile jackets. For two reasons: Due to my size, the knee pads and elbow pads just don't fit right where they belong, and, I feel like the Michelin Man when I put on one of these jackets with pads.

I have also used my Kevlar jeans as riding pants, so far for the riding season. I have added chaps a couple times. Akspyderlady uses jeans/chaps for her pants gear. When the weather goes back to "normal", (as in cooler-50 degrees or less), I will be back to jacket liners, and riding pants with liners. The liners afford some extra protection of course as far as "burn through" if you end up riding on the ground.

I drove with the same gear set up when I was on two wheels. Once again, a conscious decision, just like 1/2 helmet, 3/4 helmet, full face, open face, etc. I do feel safer on the :spyder2: (compared to two wheels) as there are more possibilities to AVOID an accident without wrecking. The downside of any accident is the possibility of ejection--which happens all to often. Then, one wishes they were dressed with gear to the 9's.

I consider myself very fortunate that in 48 years of motorcycling, I have never been involved in an actual accident. Four or five really close calls, but I dodged the bullet each time.

Good for you, Doug, losing 30 pounds!

Thanks Rascal! I appreciate the compliment. I'm actually down a total of about 75lbs over the last two years and would like to see another 25-30lbs go away.
Doing it the right way with eating right. No diet, just a lifestyle change.
