• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

3800 miles and the Wife smelled gas today. I lost my sense of smell a few years ago and can no longer smell things like gasoline, skunks, or even methane. Therefore the posts about gas fumes coming from the Spyder concerns me. Today after the 12 mile ride home from work I parked the Spyder out side for about 10 minutes and when I got ready to put her away the Wife walked over and said she smelled gas. I parked it inside and ask her to locate the source, of course the first thing she had me do is step outside since I had just came home from work and I do work as a mechanic. She said she smelled it strong up topside in the front of the seat. I had installed an extension hose to the vent from the charcoal cannister an had it coming out from under the plastic by the right footpeg. I ask her to bend down and smell the tube and she said that was the fume source for sure. I guess the cannisters do build up fumes I have not had the update done yet and I can only think of one time it was overfilled and that was 2000 miles ago when a pump failed to shut off.

If everything is running fine and this is the first time that you have been made aware of the fumes, I would just monitor it. You already have it vented, and that sounds fine, maybe you could run the vent line further back.

If you don't want to mess with it, you can "close off" the evap-canister as many have described, monitor it a little, and keep on riding. If you need the evap-canister back, you can just "open" it.

I would do the first and see if this was just a one off kind of thing. You have vented the fumes away from ignition sources so it sounds like it should be fine. Your opinion far outweighs mine.

Side note, this yesterday I put in a tank of 91 octane - I usually run 88. I got some gas smell after running 80 miles - first in over 2,500 miles. Today, when I was out feeding the Spyder bugs, I got a little at first, but by the end of the day, none.

I'm already considering extending the extension hose. Maybe I should run it into the muffler and that way I could add a little excitement to the occasional popping on deceleration.

. . . . but didn't have the guts to recommend it. But, since you brought it up . . . . :D

Having worked in Refineries and Chemical plants, I could just see converting it to a Flare.

I plugged the purge valve line and I can already smell the gas from the canister. Most are removing the canister and running the line from the tank to the left side of Spyder somewhere across from the exhaust. That is my plan but seeing a picture of where others are routing the hose would be helpful.

Guess if I run the vent into the muffler I better warn Bumblebee, wouldn't want to see her jump 3 feet in the air again, like she did when I started the Valkyrie.

Put it in the muffler...?

You may want to re-think that one... or make sure you keep a spare muffler on hand. Putting it in the muff might just blow it up... the muffler that is.

But then again you could add one spark plug at the back of the muffler and connect ot to the purge circuit and have it fire when the valve dumps the fumes to the muffler... I'd be willing to bet there would be a nice flame shoot out the pipes.

I hope everyone knows I was kidding about running it to the muffler. KRB1945 do you still have the 89 Wing? I bought one same color fresh out of the crate in 91. Loved that bike but sold it several years later when I bought a house on a dirt road. A few years later they got the black top to within 100 yds and I returned to biking.
