• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Fault Code P0170, "Check Transmission" message, and not auto downshifting issues

So I have a recently purchased 2009 GS SE5 Spyder which has been running great so far. Over the last few days I have noticed a few things and wanted to see if anyone had the same issues before I consider paying the dealership again. I've searched the forums and found some answers but can't find too much on these issues:

1. Twice so far, while riding in 3rd or 4th gear - the check engine light would come on and a message would scroll sayng "Check Transmission". The bike would then only let me downshift and not upshift unless I pressed to upshift two or so times, then the message went away and everything was fine. Did not yet know how to check the fault codes so have no idea if one generated and can't find this message in the manual. The only thing I found online was someone saying to reset the computer by turning the key from OFF to ON three times. I did this (even though I have no way to tell if the computer actually reset) and so far have not had the problem again. Just curious if anyone else had this issue. When I called the dealership, they stated they had never heard of this issue before.

2. Once I learned how to check the fault codes (thanks to this site) I was determined to see if the above produced one but the problem never happened again (so far). I did notice, however, that every time I drive I get a fault code of P0170. Actually it shows as "0 P0170' so not sure what the "0" in front means. I saw on the forums that this is related to the O2 sensor. Would it be safe to say that since the previous owner has a Juice Box installed (that I have no idea how to use or program) that this is causing the fault? If so, is it a cause for concern or just what I should expect to see with the Juice Box?

3. Lastly, and this only happened once so far, when I was driving yesterday the bike did not downshift on it's own. I was in 4th and noticed nothing was happening so I manually went from 3rd to 2nd and then the bike would not let me go into 1st even though the speed was low enough, then eventually it went to 1st. I've seen some posts on this before so think it's not that uncommon for it not to downshift, however was concernd with the fact that it would not let me immediately go into 1st when I tried.

Thanks for any help you guys have!! I love this bike but don't want to spend any more money on stupid things unless I have to!!

More then one problem.

Error code with a "P" stands for power train. 0170 is for the oxygen sensor. May need a new oxygen sensor or it could be a symptom of another problem.

Transmission shifting issue, the number one cause is old, dirty, incorrect engine oil or dirty transmission filter. If you don't know how old your oil is I recommend changing it and putting new filters (make sure the trans filter is the new larger one)

Thanks. I'll look into the sensor issue. As for the oil and filters, just had the 3,000 miles service done 3 weeks ago which included the oil change and the new filters.

Because you have a Juice Box installed, I would suspect settings that are too rich, before I would suspect a bad O2 sensor. Could be the sensor, or a combination, though. You may want to disconnect the JB or lower some settings to troubleshoot this fault. If the JB was put there to compensate for increased exhaust/intake flow from aftermarket parts, you may not be able to disconnect it successfully.

Please realize that an owner can only display active codes. I doubt your fault code is related to the "Check Transmission" warning. That warning is more likely the gearbox position sensor or shifting control. Your dealer can pull up the history of fault codes on BUDS, and troubleshoot the problem easier.
