Not trying to start another tire thread, but I do need to find a replacement front tires for my 2014 RT. My stock tires were cupped by 8000 miles and my claim to BRP that they are defective and that they should be replaced under warranty was denied.

I know a lot of owners have had good luck with the stock front tires, but not me and I do not want to try another set in the hopes that I get better results.

Since these seem to be the only ones available in the stock size and I do like the look of them my question is who has tried them, or is using them.
Feed back good, and or bad is welcome.

I do not want any tires that I would have to modify something on the Spyder in order to use them.

Thanks in advance to all that reply.

I had federals put on and made a 1400+ mile trip right after that. Weather ranged from hot and dry to cool and wet. No problems with them so far, have a bit over 2K on them so far. I do have ride on in them which may help with keeping the ride smooth.

Cupped tires usually indicate an out of balance condition. Could be defective tires that were out of round. Or can even be defective wheels. But usually it's just a bad balance and not a defect issue.

Step one..!!

find out why they were cupped. If it is a wheel, alignment/front end problem the new ones will do the same. If it is defective tires or balance they will work well if mounted abd balanced properly...

1st

1st, get your front end aligned...
2nd, get some KUMHO eco Solus HM KR22 for the front....
these tires are rated for 100,000 miles, and on my '09 RS, i find that they stick to the road really well...

:agree: Have a laser alignment done.

Laser alingment was done within the first 2000 miles (1/2" out on the right side) and when I noticed the cupping at 8000 I brought it back and had them check it. It was spot on so unless the cupping started before the alignment that is not what caused it.

Now the balance is a possability. There were a lot of weights on each wheel which I removed when I added Ride-On to each tire at 9000 miles. I knew it was too late to save the tires at that point, but was hoping to reduce the front end vibrations from the cupped tires.

Now I am ready to replace them at 15,000 miles and I am looking for better results. I know I love the Kumho that I have on the rear (9000 miles and still looking and working good).

Thanks! Good to hear!!

Many, many 2014 RTs had this issue with cupping tires. Mine did and so did the test Spyder that I had back in January. It had cupping issues and was not aligned. I have also observed many 2014s that have a bunch, 8 or more, tire weights on one side and a few (1-4) on the other.

I have the Federal Evo tires on mine and have about 13,000 miles on them. They seem to be wearing just fine. I have a Kumho on the rear for the same miles and it too seems to be wearing fine. I have experienced severe hydroplaning with this tire combination.

Hi,
I have Federal tires 165-55-15 on Front and Kumho AST 225-50-15 on rear 2014 Spyder RT-S SE6 for 6,000 miles & good grip, wear, stiffer sidewalls for better cornering. I run 18 psi in front & 26 psi in rear.
But I can spin rear Kumho tire with water on the road if I nail throttle.
I went thru down pouring heavy rain, wind, west of Oklahoma City & did not experience any hydroplane (like Anne01 did).
But I will change rear tire to Yokohama S. Drive 205-55-15 rear tire when Kumho wears down.
Rear (BRP) 225-50-15 tire is too wide for the rear rim so has tendency to balloon in center wearing out quickly.
Recommended rear tire 205-55-15 is correct width for rear 2014 RT rim, same diameter as stock rear tire, about 3/4" narrower tread.
Hope this helps your tire choice; (several rear tire choices available in 205-55-15 size).
Enjoy.

View attachment 97475View attachment 97474[/QUOTE.........IMHO JIM: Any tire you put on the rear will spin on wet pavement if you " NAIL THE THROTTLE ".......I think you are in-correct about the RIM size.....7 inches is probably the minimum for a 225-50 , but is NOT going to cause any issues .......and the BALLOONING thing is because the KENDA has 2 plys across the tread...............I do think you will LOVE that " S " drive YOKO ...............................Mike

Ann,

Do you think it was the Kumho that caused the hydroplaning, or did the Federals contribute? I have traveled through some very heavy rain with the Kumho without any hydroplaning, but all those were with a passanger so maybe that extra weight on the rear helps.
The reason I think this is last year my wife was following me on my Harley and her on the ST with stock tires in the rain. She kept falling behind and I had to slow down in order to keep her in sight. When we arrived home she told me she was hydroplaining and had to slow way down to stay on the road.

:agree: Please tell us a little bit more about the hydroplaning episodes... :yikes:
Do you think that it was the tire; or the conditions?? :dontknow:

Cupped tires are usually a suspension issue, the bike is bouncing & skips up & down.

I have hydroplaned on both my 2010 and my 2014 with the Kumho. On my 2014 I have not been in the rain much and every time I have had my trailer or, on the last two trips a RIVCO hitch hauler thingy. I do not recall hydroplaning when I had the trailer on the 14. On Monday I was in New Mexico and the road was rough, uneven patching, and had ponding of water. The other two ladies I was with, one on an RS and one on a 12 RT, both have Kenda tires and they only experienced mild hydroplaning. Could it have been that I was the leader and pushed most of the water out of the way? I don't know the answer but it was a definite pucker time as I was nearly sideways on two occasions.

Feed back good, and or bad is welcome. Unquote

When you find the fronts you want, find a car dealer with a Hunter Road Force balancing machine. AFAIC, thats the only way to go with the front wheels. Well worth the effort. At 12K my OEM fronts show no discernible wear.

I would suggest before you go spending a lot of money for tires get the front end laser aligned. My front end was out by 3/4" on one tire alone. The people who did it was Squared Away an of all the Spyders across the country they only found one that was aligned. Mine is real great now. Other owners I know had the same problem.

You must have missed my post where I stated that mine was laser aligned and checked again after the cupping showed up.
Congrats on having Joe and Ann do your alignment. Good people who do good work :firstplace:

My 2014 front tires were laser aligned on day one and still failed at 8000 miles.( the front tires also failed on the test bike I rode) My dealer replaced mine with Federal Evo s and I have 15000 on the Federal Evo and Kumho combination without any problems or noticeable wear. I hear about hydroplaning but I ride in deluges all the time and never seem to have this problem.. Maybe it is because I spend so much time ryding in the rain that I have developed a different touch.... I also love the improved cornering with the federals and no adjustments were necessary for them to be compatible with bike
