why would you not want to look thru the windshield? isn't the whole purpose to deflect wind over your helmet?
what is the advantage/ disadvantage of having it top of helmet height?

No windshield wiper, for one disadvantage, so if the windshield is fogged or water covered and you can't look over it, you have an issue. Also, a windshield does not have to be top-of-helmet high to deflect the wind and eliminate buffeting.

My 7Jurock 16" Low Boy with a flip, has the turbulence hitting above my helmet eye port. That way, the helmet vents are in the air stream, yet I have an uninterrupted view of what's ahead.
There are many negatives to looking through a w/s; bugs, rain, sun reflections, fog (this is the worst) and those fine scratches that you can't see until you are riding at night and oncoming cars blind you. If you need a full coverage w/s in front of you, for the same price as a Spyder, you can buy a Fiat 124 Spyder. Isn't the purpose of buying a motorcycle to be in the wind?

My aftermarket windshield, on my F3L is too tall and I am going to have to do something else. It is short enough that I can look over it. But the the air from behind is pushing my head forward in some conditions. I also get the odd sniff of exhaust. I just don't like it.

I'll bet there are videos on line to show you how to cut down a w/s. My first time I did one I got great results.

Look into a Madstad shield. I’vehad Them on a number of bikes and all worked well. The Madstad “effect” allows some air to bypass on bottom to break negative pressure behind shield which is what causes buffeting. Their website has a nice explanation. Plus you get a few inches of height adjustment and few degrees of angle adjustment. Quality product.

I have a 2019 F3 Limited and bought a 25” F3 custom windshield. Don’t have any problem looking though the windshield when it rains

I prefer to see just over the top of my windshield. I had it cut so as the curvature of the sides allow me to see both sides of the road where low beam will light up critters along the edge of the road without distortion. Seconds count at dusk and dawn when animals are most active. I used small pieces of black tape to mark and move them around on the windshield to determine just where I wanted the cut made. At the lowest position I have an unobstructed view both day and night. When it's raining, nothing works well but I use rain-x made for plastic and raise the windshield up all the way. That's about the best you can do besides slowing down.

Looking over your windshield ensures that the windshield will not obstruct your vision in different weather conditions as previously mentioned. However, you can still get the air to go up and over you/your helmet when looking over the shield. It is about finding the right height for you! However, if the shield you are riding with has perfect optical clarity then plenty of people have no issues looking through. It has been our experience that this is a personal preference as there are many riders out there doing both! The taller the windshield the more guarantee you have of maximum wind protection.

I like the stock windshield on my F3L as the bugs hit me in the forehead and when wearing a helmet I get good airflow through the vents, but when I have my wife on the back her head gets buffeted pretty good. With that is anyone using a windshield that they can see over (5'-8") but yet allows air to flow over the passenger?

Look through. My preference. F4 tall. There is a good amount of air coming through the space at the bottom inherent. I don't like vents and have one without. Vents do just about nothing on the F3 except get buggy and interrupt the flow of your towel when cleaning it. I recommend using >Captain Richards< on the shield and it will prevent bugs from sticking and make the f4 shed water like Rainx.

It is easy to cut using a drammel tool, i cut blueridge windshield on my F3S. You just need to take your time so that you are not overheating the shield.
