There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. F3 temperature sensor

I know this has been an issue on other models. I have searched the forums. My ambient temp always seems about 10-15 degrees higher than actual. Does anyone know where the sensor is located on a 15 f3S? Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks

Our ambient temp readings on the F3 are very accurate, but slow in adjusting to changes. (the RT was just plain wrong all the time) It is usually within 1 degree of my Indian or weather station temps. (it takes at least 5 mins to adjust after leaving the garage)

Let's see....

Not having an F3 I don't know exactly where it is but on the other models it is close to the air intake to the throttle body so it can read the air temp flowing into the intake. It generally will not be the same as the outside temp because of it's location and being inclosed with the engine heat reading the temp more off the road. Asphalt can get quite hot 170° or more....

My 2015 F3 always reads 2 degrees too high. Always. I asked the local mechanic if could be calibrated via BUDS, but he said no.

Not Related to Ambient Temp

Best I can tell, after warm up, the temperature reading has little relationship with ambient air temperature!

The temperature sensor is for measuring the air temp near the engine. It is not for telling you what the temperature is around you. It will always read high because it is hotter in there.

Why do I need to know what the air temperature around the engine is when there is an engine temperature gauge?

Air mass

Besides a spark, an engine relies on a specific amount of fuel and mass of air, not just the volume of air. The mass of air varies with the temperature. That is why the temperature of the air going into the engine is important.

On some engines (not the Spyder) there is a MAS. This device is dedicated to measuring the mass of the air.

Have you ever noticed on a carbureted engine, that it runs better on a humid day than a dry day? This is because the mass of air is different. Carbureted engines don't have a good way to control the mass.

The sensor, as some have indicated, is really for the fuel injection system, BRP simply felt it was a good idea to include a display for the rider.

so that was actually my reason for asking this question. If it does indeed use that temp(which is supposed to be ambient) for the fuel injection, and it is reading high, is that not a concern?

It reads higher than the outside air because it is closer to the heat generated by the engine. It is reading the correct temperature at that location and that is the correct information the computer needs to adjust the fuel/air mixture.

Having that information displayed for the rider is not really necessary and is confusing.

Mine always reads 8 degrees F. too high while riding. But, it reads the correct temp when in the garage. The sensor was placed too close to the engine. I found it very annoying. So, I changed the display to show RPM instead of temp.

The trouble is, BRP displays it on the dash AS ambient air temp. Its wrong. Its been wrong on Spyders since production began and they have never fixed it. They either need to make the display work correctly or do away with it. An incorrect information display is worse than not having one at all.

Also I am not sure what you are referring to as 'in there' as the F3 has no enclosed engine bay and its further off than my RT was. Mine is also 10 to 12 high all the time, even when the bike is cold in the garage, the gauge indicates about 12 above the actual garage air temp so its not just a reading at the wrong location. Its the wrong temp being displayed.
