F3-L rear tyre replacement - stuck

I have had to replace that o-ring twice. But they did not look as bad as yours. I have a full set of bearings a seals on hand just in case I need them. All I have used so far is the o-ring. That's over 5 rear tires and 2 Spyders.

A motorcycle shop can balance that wheel for you on a static balancer. Some dynamic balancers will work if it has the small center shaft. Again likely only at a motorcycle shop. My last tire I put on I used beads. I think that is what I will do from now on.

Fortunately they aren't that hard to get hold of, Billy (unless our one and only bearing shop shuts down.) I bought a couple, just in case;).

Some people say (on the internet, so it must be true;)), that the beads can sometimes get stuck in the valve and cause problems. I'm not quite sure how, so this could well be an "untruth". The beads obviously work ok for you. He did say the tyre (valve?) might be a bit small for beads, but I am wondering if that is because he usually puts them in truck tyres?

He's not keen on Ride-on or similar because of potential mess when replacing, but he did say that he hadn't used it for years so it could well be a lot better these days.

Tire shop put the beads in before they inflated the tire. Did not go through the valve stem.

I had one get stuck in a my my valve stem. Went to check my air pressure and couldn't get it unstuck till all the air was out. Was on my 99 Honda Valkyrie. Only happened once and none since then. Still use the beads.

Remove schrader valve from the stem install beads and put the schrader valve back in. But it is easier to install before airing the tire up. I usually seat the tire and break one side to pour them in .

update

Thanks for all the info, guys. Here's an update -

I have just picked up the newly shod wheel. They had no trouble changing the tyre on the new integrated wheel, but could not balance it. They had the correct sized spline, but the fastener cone would have made contact with the bearing in the hub, and he didn't want to risk it.

Unfortunately, their static balancer broke about a year ago, and there has been no call for it until today, so they aren't replacing it. I have left it unbalanced, as per Mike's experience......it has the dot aligned with the valve. I will see how this goes for a while. Do I need to remove the balance weights already on the wheel if I am going to leave it "unbalanced" or if I go with beads?

if leaving it "unbalanced" doesn't feel right, is it possible to remove the valve, fill with beads, reinstall the valve and then reinflate with the wheel still on the Spyder?

Yellow Lock tite

I can't get yellow locktite, but I have Blue (medium strength) and Red (high strength)....I was going to use Blue......

I use blue and never had an issue.
I also use Ride On for balancing my tires as well as providing a puncture seal. I do remove all weights that are on the rim.

Brilliant, because that's what I did, except for the Ride On, PW. (It might come later)

Many thanks.....

Yes, you take out the valve core and put them in. I would take the old weights off.

We have liftoff

After a couple of false starts ( like reinstalling and torqueing the axle then thinking "what's that black thing hanging down".....ah yes, it was the backing plate for the caliper, wasn't it....off with the axle nut again......and then wondering why I had play in the swing arm adjusters when I had taped them up.....oh dear, you have to push the wheel forward to the stops, not pull it back toward you :roflblack:) we have success. I even took it for a very brief test ride and no nanny messages. I hope this doesn't mean that I have done so much wrong that nanny doesn't know which message to show first resulting in my wheel falling off as I head down the highway !

Based on the info received here, I have decided to remove the wheel weights and run the tyre as is to see how it goes. If anything looks or feel amiss, I will look at installing the beads in the first instance and take it from there.

I would like to thank everybody individually, but too many people have helped with this, and while it may not seem so, I have taken it all on board to help make the process as foolproof as possible. Thank you all......you are very generous with your time, answering questions that you would have answered many times before.

If anyone is touring the Spyder factory, would you please get some autographs. It is fairly obvious The World's Strongest Man contest are holding one of their events there......the "let's see how tight you can snug this axle contest" .... 165 ft/lbs:yikes:...Mind you I got it to 155 just using my fingers, but I had to get a wrench for the last 10lbs. :roflblack::roflblack:

It's only got around 3000kms on it, Triker, so there shouldn't be too much crud and corrosion on it yet.. It had a light layer of lubricant still on it and I'll be putting some white lithium grease on the new one.

Mine looked like that after 5700 miles. First tire change.. Good luck

I've used the beads in my motorcycle for years, and I have put them thru the valve stem with the tube and bottle. they go in easy. If you break the bead to do it make sure they all go in and don't lay on the bead, they could keep the tire from a good seal.

Why are you replacing your rear tire so soon? have you worn it out this quickly???

No, not worn out, Pirate.....at 320lbs, plus passenger, luggage, fuel etc I am well over the recommended F3-L weight limit when riding. Plus, our roads out here are abysmal, and combined with the heat can severely shorten tyre life, so I decided to go with a stronger option. I always prefer to err on the side of caution, just in case.
