Exhausting issues with my RT.

New member
I have a 2013 Rt, Ltd and have just had the exhaust removed to wrap it and at the same time I removed the cat and replaced with the bypass pipe. I had some heat issues and thought these mods would solve some of the heat issues. I expected a bit more growl from the stock muffler after the wrap and cat bypass..... Wrong!! :(.... Now I have a tinny sounding muffler. Even the dealer said " I guess you will have to change mufflers to get rid of that sound."

I have been looking at other threads and about exhausts and muffler options. I am looking at the Yosh. 77 to get rid of that tinny sound. I thought of a Akrapovic Sport Touring Silencer but am thinking it may come up with the tinny sound as well. The Akrapovic is to costly to buy and experiment with. Pretty sure the Yosh 77 will not sound tinny. What I do not want is to have to look at a power commander or two brothers controller to get rid of the possible leaning out.

Like to hear from anyone who has been down this "exhausting" path and any suggestions about how to get rid of the tinny sound of the stock muffler. Maybe muffler changes or stock muffler modifications that anyone has done with success.

Oh yea......... not sure if the heat issues are better. I rode home from the dealership in our first snow storm of the season. The highways were covered in snow and had low vis. The ride was about 45 minute's of tense riding and lots of :cus::cus: yelps from me. I think the other vehicles on the road got a kick out of a Spyder going down the road in a snow storm. I received lots of stares from cars going by the other way. I have to say the Spyder handles a lot better in the snow than my Vmax.

Now I have all winter to sort things out.

I thought it was just me...I've got a 12 RT. I had exhaust wrapped it first with no issue but after doing the cat bypass I noticed the tinny sound. I got up under there with it running thinking it was metal on metal somewhere but it wasn't hitting anywhere. It eventually went away and I have no idea as to why.

I have the Yoshimura R77 on my 2012 RT Ltd and like it better than any of the other 3 pipes I tried. It has a fairly mellow sound.

It also has a removable Insert pipe that can be used to increase/decrease the sound level and back pressure. I did replace the oem Airbox but have not removed/replaced the Cat on my RT. I do not get any popping or signs of leaning out.

You might want to talk with "Spyd3r"; I think that he's taken a bunch of the oem mufflers apart, and can lend some insight...
Good Luck!

I have a 2013 RTS SE5 and have removed the airbox (kewl metal filter kit), Cat bypass, wrapped the left pipe (haven't done the right yet). After the Cat I had the tinny sound you describe. I replaced the stock exhaust with the Akropovic and love the sound. There is no more tinny sound at all, so I think mine was the muffler causing that sound. I go back and forth on whether to remove the tip baffles. I installed it without the baffles and it really does sound deep, throaty, but fairly loud. It was not unpleasantly loud, but I did have trouble hearing my GPS. I reinstalled it with the baffles and it still is deeper than stock and I hear the GPS just fine. I do not need a fuel controller and get no codes. It does backfire when you crank it up over 5500 and change gears.

Growing choices..!!

you tube has a selection of pipe videos you can look at and hear. Not perfect but gives you an idea. When you removed the cat the flow changes and the heat as well. This will make for the change in the muffler sound. Don't know if it will go away or you get used to it but the yosh pipe is really a nice choice...

Hi You might look up my post "New exhaust for 2010-2013 RT's" by Mooseman. I installed this muffler in the video and I really like it so far. Fit and finish is excellent. Sound is great! Low and rumbling but not too loud and I still have the Cat installed.

Exhaust Wrap

what did it cost to have all the pipes wrapped

Eh Cuzn

I must start by saying the entire exhaust system was removed for the wrap. I wrapped my full exhaust system in about 30 minutes with the 2" DEI Titanium wrap with a bit of help from a friend to hold the pipes while I wrapped. There was no problem with the wrap ... no pulling apart or tearing of the wrap and we pulled it very tight. I used stainless steel hose clamps at the ends they seem to work well and are easy to install. The few clamps I needed were only about $1.50 each, the wrap about $60.00. All in all a very quick and easy install. I used all but about 3" of a 50 foot roll to do the exhaust and the cat by-pass pipe. Total cost of the wrap job was about $74.00. This modification should take care of some of the heat issues. Now if I can get rid of the tinny sound from the stock muffler life will be near perfect. Near perfect except for the PMS ( Parked Motorcycle Syndrome ) we here in the north are suffering from for the next 5 months or so.

muffler noise

I too removed the cat ,ever since when I start the bike I get the tinny metal to metal noise from my muffler however I does seem to go away when it warms up .I just live with it ,only takes a few minutes to stop

P.M.S. is a real :cus:; ain't it? :gaah:

Cuzn,
Wrapping your own exhauset system is certainly within your skill level...
